Hell yeah unorthodox builds are the ones that once they get affirmed or used in pro scene, are written in history books.
If you dont try new things, the game will leave you behind. Thats what happens with meta change. Look at what happened to alch or to nightstalker. The game asks you to learn new heroes, execute new things unconventionally. If people were to be hell bent on playing carry siren, we would never have had a support naga siren.
People would never try to go elder titan semi carry, but they just dont know what hes capable of.
All i am saying, given hero flexibility as a good player you OUGHT to go unorthodox builds. Try necronomicon manta diffusal on void against an omni. Try supporting with medusa. Go critshaker. Go carry with windranger.
Be free from the politics of drafting well. After all, it is a pub and a game is played beacuse it is supposed to be fun.
With the release of 6.82, we'd say that there is slightly less reason to stray from the meta; a 4 protect 1 or 3 protect 2 strategy primarily ensures good sustainability in the late-game, and given the introduction of carries with excellent early game potential (moreso with the buffs), for instance Sven, and most notably PA, there is a greater call for more orthodox plays to minimize collateral damage in the early-mid game. However, the converse is actually more true - with better competitive playstyle and active ganking of carries, we find that there is a greater call for less predictable ganks.
The rationale is simple - people don't know how to counter these unorthodox plays, or spend more time doing so. The Beastmaster Hawk + BOT combo, for instance, is still very relevant if pulled off successfully, and greatly counters blindly clashing into teamfights. Fountain Hooking now, if anything, should be more viable to eliminate key players from fights, and the very same fountain hooks cemented Dendi's reputation as an excellent clutch player (if not the best in Dota 2 history), and Na'Vi as a wildcard team that, while less relevant in the current meta which focuses on stable cores, can make drastic impacts on games.
6.81 saw the rise of the deathball meta and good clutch plays, for instance Pudge Hooks or Mirana Arrows. It is imperative that this still remains alive to counter active turtling strategies.
just played a game with a CK mid.... he went three bracers first with a iron branch then two blades of attak into soul ring into phase into mask of madness into 3x battlefuries... into heart .... i ... u wot

It's not. You'll die in the end from False Promise. What nobody seems to understand is that False Promise does not give invincibility, just delays the inevitable. That is why carry Oracle is as viable as carry Crystal Maiden.
