Discussion: Octarine Core

I like the idea of categorizing some heroes in AP, like Necrophos if he counts.
I like heroes that are AP and AD hybrids, relying on a mix of spell damage that scales to some extent and their right clicks as well. Bristleback, Razor with a Aghs Refresher build, and Spectre if you count Dispersion as a AP carry skill, since it doesn't weaponize her right clicks.

Well that's definitely "ability power", but that's not really "carry" material. Carry material means scaling...and there are actually few scaling skills.

For example Necrophos can deal tons of damage with his ult, but when his ult is on cooldown, his damage output is severely limited. So he's definitely a semi-carry, but not more, because he lacks sustained damage (that's why I put Tinker and Timbersaw, because they have sustained damage with low cooldowns). Heartstopper Aura only scales as a damage source with how long he can stay alive...and that's actually getting shorter and shorter when the game goes late. Besides Necro scales with levels mostly, not farm (for example a support Necro with Ghost Scepter and Force Staff as only items is actually likely to survive longer in a fight than a core Necro with mass tank items).

Razor with aghs/refresher, there's no scaling. Aghs/refresher Razor is a "go high ground and end the game in the next 10 minutes" full push build, not a carry build. It falls off pretty hard to be honest, since it has no synergy with Static Link which is the only ability that gives the hero some scaling when combined with survivability and attack speed items.

Spectre or Bristleback, definitely, although they're more like "tanks" over ability power heroes, since it's a passive that does the job. I guess it still works.

On the topic of Octarine Core, how often would you buy it over Scythe of Vyse on Doom?

If the game goes super late, Octarine Core is probably legit. But given Sheep Stick is almost always the last pick-up on Doom, it's gonna be rare you build either I think, because you have a lot of other priorities.
