"how to analyse a book in 3 easy steps by Smuggels the fantastic and handsome dota player with amazing hair!!!"
Step 1.
reread. re read. re read....
not just the whole book. But paragraphs, critical events, protagonist's crisis of faith. sentences that seem wrong somehow.
ive been reading and for some reason a sentence will just STICK OUT! and ill reread it and reread it and reread until i figure out why it reads so weird!
also by re reading your reinforcing prose and sentence structure into your head. helps when writing.
Step 2.
Attach the players.
meaning... as soon as a character is introduced attach a type to them. Supporting? pro/antagonist? miscellaneous? event/situational?
by doing so your able to see how they progress throughout the story and you keep track of them. Antagonists usually are not seen much, they are an unseen perspective that you never get to read... so when it suddenly gives you an antagonists perspective to read... you sit up and take notice! why does the writer want me to see this? where in the story is it? WHY WHY WHY!!
Step 3
Flow
this is the hardest part of trying to analyse a book really super duper fricking hard ... why you ask?
BECAUSE YOUR IN IT.
its very hard to detach yourself from a books "flow" to be able to look at it. but i find it helps me when i finish a chapter and ill pause and try and remember what happened and why. if it felt like the chapter went quickly or it was EVENTFUL AND EXCITING AND WHERE THE NEXT ONE OMG I WANT TO READ IT WHY AM I PAUSING LET ME READDD ITTTT ..... *ahem* when you get that kinda feeling then you know the "flow" was very well done... when you feel "hey i wonder whos on dota atm?" or "whats on tv ?" or " ehhhh i think im done for the moment" THATS when you know the "Flow" wasnt very well done and THATS THATS THATS when you go back and re read it and try and figure out WHY WHY WHY!!! MUWAHAHA
sounds like homework huh? :P
ABOUT GAME
i was like "guys bkb is core this game buy it"
"later"
ok
we proceed to lose cause were getting controlled
"ok i buy bkb"
first fight with bkb's?
they all run away scared
ok now we take tower and then retreat till bkbs r up again
what happens?
they continue pushing and get wiped while im playing safe at the bottom lane.
i'm pretty sure we lost because of the incompetent Legion commander who didn't duel, like ever. Also, lets not forget that phenomenal omniknight who was arguing with you about not buying a BKB :'D
I couldn't possibly have done anything without my aghanim's, after which i rushed BKB as fast as i could, followed by scythe, while that axe was making a crimson AFTER you had made one like 15 minutes before :/.
Pro tip. Read Dostoyevsky. Crime and Punishment is a really good place to start. You'll find Rodion (the main character) really diverse in his feelings and life after the events he goes through)
what qualities should i count in a book? words? plots? after i analyze those things how can i know if its good/bad?
if you dont know what qualities to look out for bro i got bad news for you ... because its inherent in the analysing process. while your doing it, it should just be quite easy to see whats good or bad. i guess you need to read a lot more before you can get to that though.
like i read things and i can see straight away whether or not its written well.
read more is the only advice i can give you dude
my personal library is like cracking 2000 books haha
READ MY BOY READ!!!
"reading a book is like re-writing it for yourself" - angela carter
"that is a good book, which is opened with expectation and closed with profit." - amos bronson alcott
"You know you have read a good book when with the last close of page you feel as if you have lost a friend" - Paul Sweeny
If you want help looking at books analytically, there's probably two things you can do.
1) Read more. The more books you read, and then read again, the more comparisons you can make as you read something. These comparisons help you build an appreciation of good literature, and thus good plot, characterization and prose. Once you get ideas of what is good fiction that you enjoy, reread it. Reread it again. The more you read something again, the more the details stick out to you, both plot details, and details of the authors writing style. And once that's ingrained in you, you'll do it with all fiction you start to read.
2) Read others analysis of books you enjoy. This way is... arguably quicker, but more open to interpretation. You avoid a lot of the hard work yourself, but if you choose a book you love, and it's popular enough, you can probably find a **** tonne of essays about every detail of it. You can learn how to extract massive details from tiny bits of text, how to establish meaningful and enriching underlying detail that brings a setting to life, and how to make complex characters life-like.
Either way, it takes a very long time gather this ability properly. I'll also warn you it may leave you a little unsatisfied with your actual writing if you get caught up in the analysis.
