Ursa Build 2.0

November 8, 2012

Introduction

Schike Multz's Ursa Build 2.0

First off, I began my Dota 2 experience by learning one hero really well and sticking to them until I knew the game mechanics. Ursa was that glorious hero. But I know from experience that you will suck HARD if you don't focus on survivability first and foremost. Nothing is more terrifying than a well-fed Ursa but to get there you need to stay in the jungle, on a lane, or ganking at all times. I actually prefer not to gank at all early game unless I see an obvious over-extension with support from my teammates. Oh yea... and there's that. To play Ursa properly your going to need your team, no getting around that.

First thing your team needs to do for you to make you effective is make sure that you have a courier right away. This should be basic but playing pub games it's usually a safe bet that politely asking for a courier is worth doing before everyone leaves the fountain. To get Ursa to that well-fed state you can't ******** around walking to your fountain (and buying TPs isn't my favorite thing to spend $$ on early game).

When you hit mid game, the biggest difference in this build is that I do not rush Vlad. I just think rushing Vlad isn't the best choice because all the other heroes whom have spent 2000 gold are getting a lot more bang for their buck. But you will want it before you take on Roshan solo, or just grab a teammate (duh) and go take him out once you have Overpower and Fury Swipes (Meowth) almost maxed. Roshan really shouldn't be the defining concept in a build when you can just get a teammate.

As for late game, get Heart of Tarrasque.

Just do it. It buffs your health, which in turn buffs your Ult, which kills people.

And you will have an enormous amount of Health, it's awesome and truly demoralizing to the other team when they have to lay down 3k of damage faster than you have to lay down 2k against them.

And plus Ursa is screaming like a rabid bear who somehow learned how to hold a shield AND can teleport AND is immune to magic. See item build for elaboration on that :)

Items

I really love this site for the item help and builds for new characters, BUT... there's a lot to be desired on most builds I've looked at concerning item "flow". What I mean by this is to plan out expenditures for your courier to cover, or for you to pick up along the way, or parts of items that you should get first on the way to your ultimate goal. I suppose it's a lot easier to just list out the items your working toward and most experienced players know to pick up stuff in pieces so I totally understand. But I'm going to break it down a little more early game because I think it's important for Ursa.

For Example:

My starting build:
Tango, Stout Shield, Ring of Protection, Iron Branch

Now a lot of players might say that I'm going to run out of HP regen way too fast. That's true but I have a planned supply drop coming! To get Ursa off to a raging start, I'm just going to go light on Tangos and have them delivered with a few helpful items while im laning or jungling early game.

Supply Shipment 1:

Tango, Healing Salve, Sage's Mask, Quelling Blade

The Sage's Mask will complete into the Ring of Basilius so thats nice and the Quelling Blade is great for jungling. Once you run out of Tangos the QB will be great for Furion encounters.

Vanguard Pit Stop:

Ring of Health, Vitality Booster

Go hit up the Secret Shop when you have 1975 gold and get your Vanguard for your first big expenditure. This is essential for not dying because it ups your hp regen by 6 and adds 250 to your health which makes your Ult that much better.

Core Items:

Vanguard, Vladmir's Offering, Phase Boots, Heart of Tarrasque, Blink Dagger or Black King Bar

So yea, that's how I like to see my inventory by game end. Soon as you get Vlad go kill Roshan, the ancients next to him, and any creeps needed so you can pick up your Phase Boots ASAP. They are super important so pick them up right quick at the side shop which is conveniently located next to where you already are. Yay

So after the first three, order somewhat goes out the window. Depending on who you're playing, Blink Dagger or BKB might be neccessary to get before Heart. But here's the deal with Heart:

+300 HP, +40 Strength, 2% HP regen/second

That adds HUGE damage to your Ult. 7% of your total Health goes toward damage, this makes every point of Strength add to your damage in addition to you being an agility hero.

Once you have Blink Dagger, pretty much nobody is getting away since now you have two speed options with the Phase Boots as well. BKB is always great as per usual with many heroes.

Situational:

Shadow Blade is pretty good because Heart is so expensive I take it when I know I'm behind in farming. Having the element of surprise is great for picking off a few heroes and evening things up.

Manta Style is cool because it makes 3 uber strong Ursa's run at you instead of one. Keeps the heat off you for a bit if your outnumbered and that can be the difference between getting two kills or none being that his Ult is so Health sensitive.

Daedalus is pretty sweet because Ursa hits so fast that those crits happen fast and often taking people down quick.

Blade Mail is by no means a good build item for Ursa but I personally think it is funny as hell when you charge at someone and they panic and end up dealing a ton of damage to themselves. Just really chuckle-inducing to me for some reason, obviously pros would not fall for this but it does buy you some time before they could attack you

Creeping / Jungling

LvLs 1-4:

Don't bother entering the jungle until you hit about level 4. It's pretty low risk early levels too stay in lane and the XP farm is faster than anything you can fight in jungle right now. Let your teammate know your going to bail out after a few creep waves. More XP for him!!

Unless there is a simply too juicy opportunity for a gank on some squishy character do NOT leave the jungle or lanes. First of all, you need to farm yourself some quality items before you think about taking on other heroes. Second, assume most DoTa players are better than you. At this point in the game you have no way of combating being kited to death and your ability to do damage is heavily dependent on your health. Nukers will hamstring you immediately in that respect.

LvLs 5-11:

Jungle HARD Jungle FAST!! As soon as you can muster 740 gold, send for your first shipment of items via courier. I recommend getting the quelling blade at this point in the game so you can cut your way through the trees between creeps and speed things along. When you get the chance, double spawn your creeps and pull away your creeps to the neutrals. This'll create more XP for you and less XP for them. Fabulous! So just keep farming til you've popped all your tangos. Assist allies in tower pushes and ganking but otherwise keep your eye on the prize --> $$ & XP.

But WHAT ABOUT ROSHAN!? you might say. Well, I just don't think rushing Vlad is the right choice early game. I have to favor my own survival over getting Rosh at level 8 or whatever. That's why I order up a Vanguard 1st (plus you already have the stout shield anyway). Then I go ahead and work toward Vlad once I know I'm not going to get my *** handed to me right away. I usually take down Roshan around lvl 10-11 instead of the lvl 7-8 I could pull off with the earlier Vlad. I advocate a late Roshan visit.

Pros:
-Survivabiliy goes way up
-Likely to get Roshan first anyway
-Enhances your Ult heavily
-Increases Gank Success

Cons:
-Creates a problem with HP regen
-Coordinated teams can take Roshan away from you

If you can think of other issues please do comment, but I think the cons are totally manageable problems, where as dying is not.

After killing Roshan and hitting lvl 12ish you should be working with your team. Farm as much as possible in the Jungle but pop your head out and assist in battles. Now is the time to get points in Earthshock. When it gets late game and everyone is together it's time to put all your farm to work and rape some face with your team. Make sure not to initiate and have some people setting you up with stuns.

Skills

Throw Earthshock under the bus for most part. It's not needed in Jungling and you need to level Overpower and Fury Swipes for Roshan anyway. Once your ready to head out and start ganking people go ahead and start contributing points there.

Keep in mind Overpower costs mana and you are low on that in early game. Keep more points in Fury Swipes since it doesn't raise your mana burden early on and slow your jungling down.

Enrage is awesome. Of course take the points when you can.

On skill usage:

Click Overpower
Wait 4 seconds
Activate Phase Boots
Charge at enemy
Have ally stun
Enrage right before first strike
Overpower again
????
Profit

Spoiler Alert

(The ???? are massive amounts of dps and pwnage)

Summary

So that's what I got to say and I'm sure stuff has been left out, but alas I have spent too much time away from Dota to write more. I'm sure there is some errors in there but I think the gist of it is good info.

I look forward to your comments as scathing as they may be. As a Dota 2 player I feed on hate and criticism. Let it Begin!
