Can anyone give a brief history of the meta? I understand that they constantly change, and perhaps seeing the history might help my noobish minds a bit.

Ricing meta into early-mid game dominance meta into rat meta into deathball meta into the current semi-ricer meta.

Ricing=farming like hell and making the game go long.
Rat=you know, natures prophet

The Meta usually changes due to patches; including ones that add new heroes into the pool.

The only other time that there is a shift to the meta is the International. A new meta always forms there and is used until the next significant patch.
