I was just wondering, why did Troll just come into the pro scene all of a sudden. I mean the only change was his Fervor fix so why was that so big? Is it because the meta changed? I just don't think that that small change to his fervor stacks would cause such a large increase in popularity.
Ranged Whirling Axes got its cooldown reduced! and his ranged attacks have a 200 longer range. Gives him more carry potential and he also has a global presence which is good in a lot of lineups. He has a unique play style that you can change according to the situation.

It's a huge change actually. It used to take an insane amount of time to build up fervor stacks, now he gets them almost instantly.
Both his laning and his solo kill potential got an enormous buff.
Look at it this way : at max level, since he has one more Fervor level than before, it's almost like a permanent 34 attack speed increase.

The fervor change is pretty huge because, as hamster says, it increases kill potential, but it also makes soloing Rohan, at least imo, much quicker earlier in the game, due to the faster buildup
1. Meta shift towards late game. Troll's ult makes his entire team beastly during the late game teamfights.
2. Meta favors more late game oriented mid heroes than mid game tempo controllers (examples: Shadow Fiend, Ember Spirit, etc.) Troll fits this area nicely.
3. Fervor + Whirling axes are deceptive farm accelerators.
Once they fixed his passive and buffed his slow a bit, I think everyone realised just how good his ult is. Meta changes as mentioned too.
Troll is pretty good early + mid considering how strong he is late. With a bit more int starting stat/gain he could even be a pretty good transistioning #4.

I disagree Sando. He can make a good 1-3 but he makes a bad #4. He needs gear and levels to be good early on. If he had to go #4 then he would have to go Midas and get good farm going. Too bad being a #4 position would put him low on the farm priority. Troll also requires fighting items. Too bad a #4 support would need to get support items like Euls, Mek, and Force Staff. Items that don't really help Troll.
