I have a smurf, purely because i have friends who only like to play ranked but are way too high for me to join them, my account is dross (1.5k area) whereas when i play with them in non-ranked (in high or very high skill) i do fine. So i need my smurf to get a decent mmr rating so i can play with friends, otherwise i wouldn't care about it at all.
Don't worry about your MMR and just improve, it really is just a number to an extent. People also like to compare their MMR to others but I suggest ignoring it to focus on improving. If anything make a MMR goal to reach, then maintain; rinse and repeat. Get a replay, watch your replay and maybe send a replay to a higher MMR player for some tips. Practice certain heroes, don't pick "OP" heroes just to artificially increase MMR, it's similar to those muscle-heads that are into juicing.
I don't know. I consider myself as a versatile player. But like, if my goal is to reach a higher MMR i like to call mid to get someone like sf, or necro. Sf since people cant last hit / deny properly in this trench and necro cause people dont understand how good he is mid
The real way to know how effective you are in matches is not the numbers like KDA, CS, etc. It's in questions like "Could you have avoided that death?". Watch your replays and focus on every little detail.
For example, rather than judging yourself by how much CS you got, count the CS that you missed out on but should have been able to take. If you missed out on a Creep because you had to move back to avoid Pudge's Hook: "could you have avoided the Hook by moving in a different direction AND hit the Creep?" and if yu could: "Would that put you in a risky situation, or cost Mana? Would it have been worthwhile to get that Creep?".
Every time you die, look at the Heroes involved in killing you (P.S. remember to change the camera so you have fog for your team only) and ask yourself questions like: "When did they decide they could kill me?", "When was the last time I saw them before they jumped me?", "How long were they missing for?", "Should you have been in the position you were in when you got jumped?"
If you keep doing this for every match, you'll start finding the numbers that matter. For example, you may find that on average, you miss about 15 Creeps that you "should" have gotten and that around 5-7 of them were because you Denied an Allied Creep instead of Last Hitting (not worth it). You may find that most of your Deaths when you're Solo Mid are because someone grabbed a Rune and you were more than 450 Units forward of your Tower when you got jumped.
...and because you've figured out teh numbers that matter, you can improve on your weak points...
...speaking of which...I should probably start watching my own replays again. 8{3

+Rep for your #Roadto50Rep <}3
You can always post replays here for analysis, personally, when I do it, I pick a game I can't see any major mistakes in after I've watched it just to see if I'm missing something. If you know of at least one issue you had in a game, you should probably focus on that issue first before trying to find more problems to solve.
Im ALWAYS on normal skills. Not even high skills once.
This ^ is decided by MMR as well, for example if you see me queing with Bunkan and Dimony-chan, oor combined MMR is probably going to put us in Normal Skill. Que me with Sando, Wulfstan, Nubtrain and Hades, game suddenly becomes Very High Skill. 8{3
