I want to put sand king in on a captains mode team but I am having a hard time putting him somewhere to lane early game. I have thought about having him support on a tri lane with someone like AA but he is melee so it would have to be a ranged cary.

I like his skills but he is not a mid, hard cary, hard support, jungler, so the only place to put him would be the off lane. Could there be an of lane sand king?
My lone druid starting items are 12 Iron wood branches, 6 for the hero and 6 for the bear. Even if the bear does not get stats more twigs are OP on any hero.

Too easy to counter him if he has sandstorm. smart players can use the map to their advantage as sandking and generally be just fine, just takes a little skill and awareness. If you run a dual off lane you are going to be fine. Sand king best fits into an agressive tri-lane. his ability to stun multiple targets is extremely important to a trilane. The thing to keep in mind is to get a very fast blink dagger and to get exp in the early game to get your ultimate. He is somewhat finicky to put into a lineup and have optimum farm and exp for people who need it.

He could be a roamer along with another stunner like Earthshaker. That way, you could leave a lane empty for your hard carry to get some solo exp for a while

I agree with naga, he can be a great roamer, also, on lane, he can support, he can just stack and pull creeps and help the lane when needed. He needs just Arcane Boots and Blink Dagger, these items are core on him.

He can also fend off the hard-lane against pushers.A good example off countering someone with Sand King would be to pick it against Broodmother.

tbh, most effective sand kings I saw outside of the 1on1 vs brood, is the aggressive (vs enemy safelane) trilane sandking
Even a warped mind can see the odds stacked against it!

Yeah he's a bit of a niche hero to place - it does depend quite a lot on the other players on both teams. He's not a true support hero, but he's definitely not a carry either.

- He works well as a safe lane roamer/stacker with a strong ranged carry (similar to ES), or as part of a tri-lane with a ranged support

- He can work well mid vs some melee heroes due to Caustic Finale

- He can work in the off-lane with another hero (not convinced he can solo effectively against any kind of reasonably co-ordinated opposition who'll get dust/sentry wards).

I've also seen a lot of teams who used to put a farming sandking into the easy lane, if you have more of a carry in the mid, or jungle. XBOCT used to do that all the time, but not very recently. Don't really think it's the best place for him xD

a sand king with an early blink has a huge impact in those early teamfights, he's just as dangerous if not more than a magnus in early-mid game, you just need to make sure that once he has his blink up, most of it all the other heroes are ready to push with you, from then on a huge gold advantage + map control will go your way, it's nearly impossible to get back from that if everything goes to plan simply because that's be too much pressure too early and the gold difference will be quite big.

ofc, not everything always goes according to plan :-|
