Most of my games have been me as a carry, and I've been successful, but I realize that many other people find success with a carry too. I've tried playing support characters such as bane and treant, but I have yet to win a single match by playing support. I've lost the past 6 games as a support, although I failed to see what I was doing wrong. What do you guys think? Should I continue to play support or go back to carrying? Or how about another role, such as initiator or ganker? I want to find a role well-suited for me, but at the same time, I want to stand out from other players.

Depends. Do you have a team with you?

If you do, then I would recommend offlane. It's pretty unique (At least compared to semi-supp, mid and hard carry) and if you can pull it off it's really fun.

As for supprting, did you ward correctly, not take farm, pull/stack, deward, smoke gank, etc corrently? If you did, then the carry/ies you are supporting is probably doing something wrong. If not, then you should do those things I mentioned.

I think it would be good to master every role, or at least be able to play at least one hero from each role. For example, I can play Crystal Maiden or Rubick when someone asks me to be the support, while I can play Alchemist or Naga Siren if I need to be the carry.

When you're playing pub games alone and you're the last one to pick, there may already be 2 or more carries in the team and no supports. Or sometimes, there will be too many supports and no carries - something I've experienced way too many times. So if you want to have good games, you should be able to play a variety of roles.

Oh, and when you're the support player, please, please, buy the wards. Everyone loves a support who buys wards.

I have played off lane weaver before and found it very enjoyable, and that I was successful. As for support, I did ward where required and upon request, and I'm pretty sure I didn't steal carry farm(unless he/she went out of lane). I almost always go for mek, so I supported my team in terms of heals. It might have been the fact that the carry was feeding the other carry, hence us losing the game. Thanks for the reply anyway. I probably just have to practice support more and hope for a good team. I'll try to play off lane a bit more as well.

Initiator and Ganker aren't especially specific, you're usually an initiating support or ganking support etc, I've never really found myself stuck with any certain 1-5 spot, I usually just pick up what the team needs, and to do that you sorta need to know how to play both farm dependent heroes and undependent heroes.

Or I guess you can find / make a team that puts you in a 1-5 spot, and you master the heroes that fit that spot and maybe one day stand out as a carry / hard support etc.

That you've lost playing as a support might not be your fault, few things as dissapointing as supporting someone that doesn't pull their own weight however I think that creates the "5 carries on a team" mentality, where nobody trusts anyone and the team suffers as a whole because of it.

In the end I'd suggest practicing all sorts of roles, if carry is all you know how to play and there's already 4, it's probably not needed.

Good luck to you :-)

Believe me, DotA has plenty of people that want to hog the carries. While you might not get as many kills as a carry, a support (such as Shadow Shaman) is an essential part of almost any team; regardless if your teammates recognize it or not. Offlane pushers (like Nature's Prophet) are not only extremely important, but also helpful. While your team makes a mess out of mid lane, you can scoot up to your hard lane and take a tower before the enemy team knows what hit them.

Sounds to me like you do better with a more impactful role. If you win by carrying, then continue to carry. Don't let these people convince you how important/appreciated/needed/useful a support is.

I don't agree with you: if you don't always play in a five-men stack, you will be forced to support eventually. For example, I just had a match with this Warlock guy that was actually friendly and could speak fluent English with the microphone, but when he decided to trilane with Chaos Knight (me) and Rubick he just stood in lane sapping experience and pushing as much as possible. At the end of the game, he just said "Sorry, I can't support. I don't know why, I do everyhing possible, but I just can't do it." Obviously, you can't take seriously a guy like this and you don't want to become like him either.

Returning on topic, if you stick to carries because of their killing potential I'd suggest you to support with Heroes like Nyx Assassin, Naga Siren or Elder Titan, whose damage is pretty high at all stages of the game and do a lot both when lane supporting and ganking/pushing with the team. I'm not "forcing" you to support as PeachFuzz said, but I'm pretty sure you would enjoy these kind of Heroes.

Thanks for the response! I'll try giving those heroes a shot, especially Naga cuz i haven't gotten around to playing her yet.

well as mentioned (if you play a lot of all pick), then you really need to be comfortable with at least one or two support heroes/role. As we all know all pick commonly ends up with too many carry picks.

Also don't concentrate too much on 'role', concentrate more on specific heroes, e.g there are some heroes i just absolutely cannot play because of things like attack animation, turn speed /move speed etc. Personally I can only play a handful of supports, not because of the role but because all roles have such big variety of heros that fulfill them.

In your op you say you lost six games as support but really that doesn't tell us anything. More importantly do you think you contributed to the team in those games. Theres just no way to judge by wins because you can play the game of your life and be a godlike pro but lose because of teammates/ bad hero matchups / lanes etc..
