As a midlaner, a failed gank can hurt you a lot and can put you at a disadvantage to your opponent. Make sure you communicate so you can pull off the gank,
2. As a support, before asking mid for a gank
Although ganks are really nice, here are some things you should keep in mind.
Is your lane pushed out?
Are you and the mid-laner healthy and ready to gank?
Will the the gank work?
As said before, a failed gank hurts the mid a lot. Make sure all spells needed are off cooldown and you have enough HP to kill the enemy. Also, ganking a pushed out lane is difficult, unless the mid is highly mobile.
this is going to be a bit long winded, but I'll try and sum it up fast. So, I'm a team of 5 heroes per match, you ideally want to be strong at all stages of the game, that's why you pick supports and carries. For instance, you pick two supports so that you can get some successful tanks on other lanes early game, which then creates space for your carry to farm. Ideally, you want to create space. Sometimes, that means supports creating space for mid, and sometimes that means mid creating space for your carry. A support will gank mid early on, to try to win or at least even up the mid lane (my favorite by far roaming duo is Bane Mirana, even though it's currently a bit out of style.) once your supports have created space for your mid by ganking the opposing mid, it's your MIDS job to create space for the carry by using a level and gold advantage to secure kills or objectives.
So, long story short, you ideally want a support to gank mid early on to get the ball rolling. It's all about creating space for the carry.
Side note, sometimes you gank mid just to shut down the opposing MIDS farm, not just to create space. For instance, I try to smoke gank mid often when playing against heroes such as Tinker or Storm Spirit, trying to keep them away from that key item or level
Another trench tier belief is that it is the mid's job to gank. But as I play with players who are better than me, I notice that it seems to be the opposite; it's the job for others to gank mid. What I'm curious about is where did this myth come from? Is it because of all the "mid or(and) feed" Pudge players or is it part of an even deeper, darker conspiracy?
It's because people in low skill Tiers don't know how to Lane properly (usually Spectre pickers ._. ), thus they think that the nearest player (Solo Mid) should come and save them, because they're "special".
You should never rely on a Solo Mid to Gank. If you're running Dual Lanes against a Team with a Safe Tri, it's because you're confident that the Safe Laner can Farm with only one Support while the Offlane can easily disrupt the other Team's Safe Lane and contest Farm. If you're running a Tri-Lane, as Sando said, the Supports and even Solo Offlane should be Ganking as they have more Space to do so. If you're running Dual vs Dual Lanes, you should make sure you have strong enough Lanes to get Farm without needing Ganks.
While some Heroes can Gank from the Mid Lane early on, it's still much better for them to focus on Farming. The only time a Mid Laner should be Ganking is when they are confident they will secure a Kill or 3. NEVER ask for a Gank because you "need" it, only ever ask for a Gank when you're confident it will succeed. If you're not getting Farm out of one Lane, why drag another Hero out of their Lane to stop Farming?
P.S. To all the people still playing Pudge Mid, pls, read patch notes for the last 3 updates, Bounty Runes, longer lvl1 Meat Hook for Pulling Hard Camps and more Exp/Gold for Kills/Assists on "Supports" means there's no reason to waste a Lane by giving it to Pudge any more. Roam and Gank from lvl1 ftw! <}3
I like playing offlane or roamer pudge, always in games i play pudge i request for a mid player to take the lane. Then i go and leech xp from the offlane while netting first blood and get to lvl 3-4. Then i start roaming to safelane and keep ganking. I make sure the supports have to get wards or they lose, which imo is the way pudge should be played.
Guys, mind me sharing some experience since the good fellows here has explained very well already?

In some of my pub games, the mids would gank. They go to a lane in hopes to get kills. Now this is very fine, but when the ganking mid is outworld devourer or Shadow Fiend.. You know your mid will screw up. I dont think i've ever heard a 'report mid no gank. instead I would rather hear 'report mid for ganking' kappa. I mean, I cannot imagine why would you gank with outworld devourer, even though that ulti.. but I cant seem to remember a good OD gank in my games.. maybe it had happened.. but im not sure.
Then there's the lvel 4 ganker, and although I do not thing it would work out I think most of those ganks actually worked.. but maybe thats because Pudge is a better ganker than Outworld Demolisher.
