I have been playing Dota 2 for ~160 games, and have come to the conclusion that no matter how good I am at support, if my team are potatoes, I am ****ed. If I play carry (Which I don't, I main support) I might have a chance if my team doesn't feed. But if I play support, I can't help my team mates except for stunning. Which they take as me trying to kill them. So they attack the full health carry. When they are below 10%. If anyone knows any way to win reliably as support, please tell me.
keep playing, at 160 games you've barely even dipped a toe in the dota2 water. play with mates with good communication and find a good coach who will play with you and help you out and teach you the ins and outs of dota. use pings or all chat to communicate targets in team fights and once you move into higher lvls you will be able to play with better more experienced players.
just keep on keeping on haha.
if you feel you are better then the people your playing with then pick early game finishers like warlock mid or dominant snowballers like Storm Spirit.
Try a roaming support... generally pubs do not expect 'unusual' tactics such as roaming, ganking midlaners and trilanes. If you're a roaming support, you can easily set up ganks and get your carries free farm. I recommend Shadow Demon or Wraith King.
There are two kinds of people in the world; those who can count, and those who can't.
some say: http://dotabuff.com/matches/708679200 game is hard, If you have to play support in lower level games and you don't think your team can carry through well you can pick agreesive supports that can carry a bit e.g recent sk game: http://dotabuff.com/matches/708779069 I was doing a ton and then leaving most kills to spectre who all though not the best spectre was able to stomp with an extra 10K gold up her sleeve (does she even have sleeves...?). To the point anyway, you can play aggressive supports like Sand King, Lina and Ogre Magiand you can also play supports that can, but are not great as carry such as Vengeful Spirit
It can feel that way when your team is sucking and you're playing support - but it can be the same in any role.
The thing I will say is that while good supports don't necessarily win games, they do definitely help you avoid losing them. Not having the necessary basics - Animal Courier, Observer Wards etc can easily cost you games. Done well, they make quite a decisive difference. The slight issue you've got at lower levels is whether your team mates make proper use of them.
If you're feeling like you're struggling to make an impact, DON'T pick another carry if your team already has plenty - this just spreads the farm thinner and messes up your lanes more - try as mentioned either a roaming support, or one will really strong team fight. Even the worst teams can make use of a well placed team fight ult, or you can almost win them on your own in the right circumstances.
In my opinion, support can't single-handedly win a game, but they can single-handedly lose one. Basically, you need a reliable teammate - maybe a friend you trust - to play carry when you're supporting, but if you're a good carry and your support isn't good (doesn't pull, doesn't ward, doesn't have a TP scroll...) not only you, but your whole team is gonna have a hard time. People say supports win the early game, and that's true, but if your carry is bad the mid game is going to be really though.
I love supporting because it's more exciting than farming for 20 minutes in the lane and you don't get pressured if your next item choice is difficult, but most of the time I need to play carry because my friends aren't that good at it (especially in captain's mode). D: They can support well at least, maybe one of them is not perfect but I'm okay with their skill level.

This ^
On the plus side, 2 Supports can dominate a game, leading to 3 very strong Cores if they know what htey're doing (even if one of the Cores *cough* Mirana*cough* doesn't)

First Blood? All the Support's work, DK couldn't stun us both 8{D
Was buying Wards and important Items (Mek) hard? no, because we knew how to share the load and ended up Farmed without neglecting Wards. <}3
Did the Cores feed? Yes...but not as much as they could have without our help! 8{D
I wuv you Xyrus <}3.
Hah yeah, it's so easy when you have supports who know what they're doing - share the responsibilities so you can both get your stuff when you need to, while making sure the team has everything they need. I guess the 400+ gold a few seconds after the horn helps too :).
Too bad I never get any good carries when I play support. And I am tired of always getting stuck with people who think that Sniper Riki and Drow Ranger are the best carries in the world.
That is why I always would prefer playing an offlane hero. So I actually can go into a semi-carry build if our carry ends up being useless.
