Just curious cause of the way MMR rating doesn't actually match your individual contribution to the team as opposed to winning/losing, how people raise their solo ratings.

Pick Storm Spirit and Stomp!

If you see a Legion Commander, Sniper, or some other useless Hero get insta-picked, just abandon so you don't lose any MMR, if you don't get Mid because someone insta-picked Pudge and the other Team has a Queen of Pain Mid, abandon immediately, etc. etc.

The way the MMR works...http://blog.dota2.com/2013/12/matchmaking/

if you're too lazy to read here is my ASSUMPTION!

If you've ever asked anyone in game what their MMR is, it usually ranges 0-400 within your bracket.

How i assume it would work is once you start queue, say you're a 3000 MMR. It's going to start searching +/- 25 MMR and the longer you're in queue it will add +/- 25 until there are 10 players who are within the parameter. Once all 10 players are within the parameter, they try to balance it out. Say the highest MMR on Dire is 3300 and on the Radiant, it's 3290. That would be the highest and the lowest would be 2800~ on each team or so. Once that is decided the other 3 remaining players on each team will be somewhere between 3300~-2800 and the average MMR would be roughly the same on each team.

Some of the search requirements are:
Region
Language
Rating
# Of games

Only those 4 are the ones i can think of from the top of my head.

The system will definitely pair you with someone of the same region, that's a given. With the language exploit where you and other friends can queue in at the same time under a given language and be matched with them seems to be higher than rating? i'm not too sure about that.
During my games i've noticed i get individuals who have played roughly the same number of games as i have. If there is none, then they will search for the next best qualified.

Obviously, no MMR system is perfect. It's a complex thing to make with so many factors that a AI can only predict. Due to the law of large numbers, the more games you play. You'll eventually hit a rating and within that rating is your parameter where you MAY belong. Though this is flawed since individuals usually become better as they play and understand the game more often.

Ofcourse there are always inexperienced players in any bracket as players may know about the game and can play a wide selection of hero, but that specific individual may only specialize in a handful of heroes which they are capable of playing to a different level.

I'll use myself as an example, I'm roughly 3950 currently and slowly going up. I specialize in mainly middle and support. Occasionally i'll play any other role but those are my first two priorities. If either is taken then i'd have to suffice for the hero that i am capable of playing for the given match. I know a wide range of heroes, practically every hero out but do i play most of them? No, i don't find them as entertaining as the other roles or too much work to play a specific hero, so i specialize in what i can and where i can.

You should probably do the same thing if you want to raise your rating. From your topic, it seems as if you're trying to beat the system to increase your rating. The best way to do it is specialize in what you feel most confident in, if it happens to be taken then go for the next best thing. From what a pro player told me who is roughly in the 5000~ range, best way to climb up the MMR is to play CM/Alch roaming support and provide the lane control to "x" lane.

Also being humble and willing to learn from your mistakes is a huge factor as well. I used to be quite the arrogant player and from time to time i do have my moments but, i try to learn from my mistakes to make myself a better player overall.

Also in addition to everything i said, once you reach a certain rating. It all becomes a mental game, who can get into the mind of their opponents first. If you get to that stage, practice and watch your replays on how you play and when you should enter their mind to show dominance. It's an extreme key factor!

I started out around 3k mmr and now am 2800... I can literally play any role proficiently just I prefer mid cause I like playing invoker. I might just do life stealer all the time to just auto carry victory.

Im pretty sure its an ELO system now and it took into account your old mmr and calibrates it based on the mmr of your team mates.

Solo Queue, well how well do you play with others? I've been more or less using solo queue to try new things, nothing intentionally to ruin games but it's my reprieve from 4-5 slot so I can play mid. Between HoN (both psr and mmr), League, and Dota, it's a proven way to at least get outta the snub brackets: Pick a dominating Mid, destroy ****, win games. Did it very well with Pebbles, Armadon, Valkyrie in Hon, got to Plat 3 with Twisted Fate, Zed, and Khazix in League, and in Dota with Invoker, Shadow Fiend, Razor, even Terrorblade once, just pubstomped my way up the ladder.
Safest way because it's solo, if you know you're proficient with the hero, pick it, pub stomp go up, other than that I think team ranked is much more worth the time investment, as it is with players you hopefully trust, but using solo queue to find like minded individuals for the team ladder is also a very good way to go up.
Mid hero-snowball-stomp-gives you the best chance if you're afraid of randoms derping around
Step 1: Pick Bristleback
Step 2: type in all chat:"GL hf"
Step 3: solo offlane
Step 4: first blood triple kill solo vs trilane
Step 5: continue head butting keyboard
Step 6: don't care, Bristleback doesn't give a ****
Step 7: screenshot repeated: BB OP comments in all chat
Step 8: alternate games with Slark pick
