I sometimes watch games without commentators and will probably do it more often. I did it recently for one match and didn't find that I missed anything. I had it set on player perspective which I find very interesting. To see exactly what the player sees adds a whole new dimension to the game.
About the main post, I completely agree with you: some people that try to become casters need much more improvement, but on the other side I love when PFlax is the second commentator (though he doesn't know much about mechanics). My favourite caster is Tobi, not only because of his emphasis but also because, usually, there are lots of pro/retired players that cast with him and give a lot of insight. I mostly watch games casted by Tobi, but unlike a lot of people I don't mind having a "bad" co-caster in the same game. The Capitalist is also great (in fact he was my favourite co-caster back when he didn't work at JoinDOTA), but somehow I can't stand Ayesee: I think he would be better as a golf or poker commentator, he just seems so boring to me. SUNSFan and SyndereN are also entertaining: one brings the fun and the other the knowledge.
About the main post: that's why I strongly prefer to watch without commentators (so much more convenient!)
It's your first post, so it looks like you've made an account just to answer to mine post! I am glad.
My point was, though, that commentators are essential when it comes to watching pro games. Can you imagine watching TI4 without anyone screaming: GO FOR THE THRONE, THERE IS NO WAY BACK! ?
Only the commentators with experience, knowledge and that special "thing" that will make you want to watch more games casted by that caster. The bad ones is what I am ranting about.
There is another thing. While I am watching games I do it with my girlfriend, drinking beers, eating pop-corn... Just like we are watching a movie. This is why I need entertaining commentators and I can't control the mouse and commentate while I am having my beer, right?
