I have a friend who is currently at 4.1k and he always complains about the trench. I'm amazed. From my low 2K vantage point i would have though when you get to 4K everyone is better at the game and more cooperative.
Amazed it's so bad there. Congrats on making it out though!
It's just incredibly annoying because I think the 4k bracket has the most inconsistent players with each player playing at very big different levels. Between 4000-4199 you get players that are incredibly inconsistent and some still belong in the 3k bracket. A lot of these players are players who spammed the "OP" heroes to gain MMR or got carried there. 4200-4499 you start to get more consistent players but they're too focused on spamming what's currently strong so there's no improvement when it comes to thinking outside the box. There are some good players stuck 4000-4500 but a big majority are egocentric ********s.
At 4500-4799, you start to get a lot of account buyers and this is the range I started having trouble with. At multiple points in time, almost every other game you'll get account buyers like that 5.1k Alchemist I mentioned a few days ago. So far from the little time I've had between 4800-5000, you get a lot of emotional egotistic players that will throw a winnable game.
I'm not saying 4k is bad but this was the only bracket I've been in for a very long time so I understand the nuances of this trench. This is a bracket where I consider is the transitionary phase of whether or not you can be a very consistent player.

Wow... That sounds like hell man! I hope to never graduate from 3k (my current aim!). I'll let my friend know he has a long, hard road ahead of him! haha
Obviously i want to improve, but i play with people who are, generally, better than me and i usually play in parties, so this is how i do it. Play with people better, analyse when i have a bad game.
I hope you find a nice patch of goodness after the full 1k of awfulness. Though i can imagine the higher you get the more troll/earth spirit/imba-hero spammers you will get...
honestly i play with a few 6k players and 5k and 4k
its not about skill level (though that does play a factor just not as big a one as you think).
its about decision making. one 6k friend i can beat 1v1 mid when we vs each other on my best hero(hes pretty good with it as well)... and i mean consistently beat him.
BUT
in game he dominates like .... dominates to a factor of bazillion he regularly ends up with 20+ kills and zero deaths and 800-900 gpm even when playing a normally gold starved support.
i get annoyed and ask him WHY is it that im only 3.5k and he is 6k yet i can beat him 1v1 mid 60% of the time...
skill gets you up to 2k-3k. its how you make decisions during your game play that elevate you above that.
you might pick different heroes and try and not be annoying but when it comes down to it .... winning matters thus the decisions you make matter and if your not making the right ones then welp :(
BTW GUYS ...... 69 reps ...heuheuheuheu he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he

On topic, Smuggles is right. Decision making is what decides your MMR, because skill is already a prerequisite in this game.

The two go hand in hand - making the right decisions is super-important, but you need to be able to execute them well to be successful. Mechanical skills and timing can really matter, especially when executing difficult and complex moves. It's also no good knowing you need to land hit well in a tough lane, actually doing it gets the result.
However, I would agree decision making is the biggest problem in my skill bracket. I'm not just talking about..."do I use this ability here" or "would it be stupid to charge 5 people on my own", but a fundamental lack of team/strategy understanding.
E.g. "I'm a core hero so it's vitally important I NEVER let the supports get any last hits" (seriously, they may be 6 slotted with buyback gold, but damned if they're letting anyone else get anything).
Or "My lane hasn't gone particularly the way I wanted it to, so I'm going to make stupid plays now despite us winning elsewhere".
Or "I fundamentally don't understand the concept of when our team is good versus when their team is good - I'm a carry so I need to sit in the jungle for 25 minutes regardless".
Or "I always build these skills and items, cos it's the best way, I saw a pro player do it. Maybe I am playing in a lower skilled pub with complete strangers, but that super-efficient build with no tangos against an aggressive trilane is still the way to go".
Essentially, letting a self-centered perspective and lack of understanding influence them waaay more than basics concerns like "what can I do to help my team win?".
Whoever -reps this guy gets free stuff from me. But seriously, I never said I'd be aiming for 5k. It's obvious that you want to improve. But that comes in time, otherwise, I'd be spamming Earth Spirit in all the games. You don't see me do that, in fact, I never play the same hero twice in a row unless I random.
