As I said in the title I've been playing for about a year, maybe a little more. I'm decently experienced, but I wouldn't call myself great. My profile is level 12 and I'm getting close to 13. I haven't played too much in the year obviously or else I would've gotten to 13 already. I've been playing a lot more lately and I started watching some pro games and a thought occurred to me, I suck. So before I embarrass myself in the ranked matches, I wanted to ask for some general advice that any experienced players have to offer me. Anything would be appreciated.
I screwed something up and deleted what I said but i got it back here

don't calibrate now.

I made that mistake. if you are level 13 please do not calibrate. you need a lot more experience to get decent mmr. you have to tough it out to about level 30-40. only then can you get your real mmr.

Levels only tell you how many Item drops you've had, they're not a good basis for deciding when to calibrate for Ranked.

The best way to know when you're ready is to stack with people who are already at the level you're aiming for. Once you've learned to play a sizable amount of Heroes in each position (Safe Laner, Mid, Offlane and Support) and can keep up with your friends, THAT is when you want to calibrate, as you can be sure to get the MMR you want.

If you jump in at lvl40, you'll maybe hit 3k, but I doubt that most players would get past 2.5k so early into the game. Personally, I would aim for nothing less than 3.5k.

If you end up with an MMR you aren't happy with, with a winrate of 55%, you'll only climb 250 MMR every 100 games! That means going from 2k to 3k could take 400+ games. Always second guess when you should calibrate, it's a long road if you want to climb higher.

I calibrated at around level 70, and I got 3.2k. Playing ranked is much more stressful and other players are often offensive tryhards, so ask yourself if you want to live in that environment.

In the end of the day, it is just a number next to your account. I think you should grow up more as a Dota player to truly understand it. At some point of playing Dota, you should have that feeling: "I know what I am doing, I really know what is going on in this game, I can make right decisions, I can think of good strategies in my games, I can be a winning factor in my games...".

In my opinion, only then you are capable of actually ENJOYING ranked games. If you can't feel this, you will often feel confused, angry and anxious.

You may think: "This is not what I want, I used to enjoy this game...".

Wait with this, don't rush things.

As I mentioned in another thread, it doesn't really matter where you calibrate if you're good enough to move up. Though it will affect the level of players around you.

If you calibrate at 2k MMR and are actually 3k MMR in skill, you will reach it. If you calibrate at 4k MMR and are actually 3k MMR in skill, you will drop.

There seems to be emphasis on techniques affecting where you calibrate, but in the end it will have little bearing on where you end up, unless you calibrate exactly where you should be. Trying to increase your MMR for MMR's sake will just end up negatively impacting you, in my opinion.

The problem is, it takes a large number of games to move up, even with a 60% or 70% winrate. Playing in sub 3.5k games is hardly "enjoyable", so it's best to wait until you're confident that you're going to reach a level of MMR you're happy with 1st time around.

But if you aren't going to play ranked a lot, I personally see no point in not calibrating. The point in MMR is to track your improvement. It's not like MMR itself would make you a better player, it's your actual game sense and mechanical execution that defines it. The only thing MMR does directly itself is that it gives a glimpse at the level of players you play with in RMM. If you aren't ready to fight your way through the MMR ladder, why would you care about it? You'll do it in regular MM too, you just don't see your hidden MMR.

Who's to say playing in sub 3.5k MMR games isn't enjoyable if that's your level?

5k MMR games wouldn't be enjoyable for me because I'd get stomped on a regular basis. I'm much more likely to enjoy 3.5k MMR.

Calibrate whenever you feel ready. Wait, or don't wait, I genuinely don't think it matters too much. If you calibrate early and start low, you'll be playing at your current level. If you choose to play Normal for a while and then calibrate later on (and therefore higher), you'll still be playing at your current level.

Fair point, I guess.
