hey guys I was just checking out the steam store because I'm looking for a new game. I did notice that Dota is one of the only games for free out there but I'm more of the CoD person.. any advice?

I actually used to play CoD a lot myself, but since I switched to DotA I’ve barely touched my PS3:D It’s more complex than you could imagine.. compared to cod there are so many more game varieties in dota.. it feels like a new game every round!
Here’s how it works: there are 108 heroes (characters) that you can choose from and they all have between 4 and 6 spells, which can be passive and active. An active spell would be a stun or a lock down and a passive spell would be a regen/degen aura for example. The items that you buy are basically like extra spells.. either active or passive and active items cost mana just as your preset actives. You start off from level 1 every single game and have to work your way up to the maximum level 25. If your enemies are owning you might not even get to like lvl 15:D and that will happen a lot in the beginning.. at some point you’ll have figured it out tho..
so the main principle of dota, as the name tells, is to defend your ancient and destroy the other team’s ancient. (you should take a look at the dota map for this) On the bottom left side is the radiant base and on the top right the dire base. You’ll be assigned randomly and it doesn’t matter which side you’re on since the map is almost symmetric. The usual hero setup is 2 heroes each top and bot lane and a solo hero mid. Soloing a lane means you get solo exp which lets you lvlup faster and hopefully get stronger faster than your solo mid opponent.
so over the course of one game, you’ll keep on collecting money by either lasthitting creeps who spawn every 30 secs and move from each ancient on the lanes towards the middle of the map to fight each other, or by killing other heroes. Every game has different stages: first, the laning phase where both teams just stay in one of the three lanes (and lasthit to get money) until lets say minute 8 or 9, but that depends on how your game goes. After that, mid game, people start ganking/roaming (roaming around the map – going to different lanes) in order to gain advantage over the enemy. And finally, in the late game, the two teams show off their farm (collected money) by fighting until one team pushes a lane all the way to the ancient and destroys it.
There are two different types of heroes; carries and supports, although there are some sub-groups, but lets just keep it simple for now. An ideal team consists of one hard carry (who takes as many lasthits as possible), called position one player, a normal carry (who takes all lasthits, unless he’s in a lane with the hard carry), called position 2, a semi-carry, who has to adapt to the course of the game and support the team accordingly and 2 supports. The supports make for mana and hp regen for their carries and spend all their money on items that support the team.
But this is theory.. in praxis, everyone goes for carries because they want to get kills.. kills are not the main point of dota tho.. but you won’t be playing with good players, who understand this until you’re on a high enough lvl anyways. After every game you gain exp on your DotA account. When you search for a match, you’re put together with other players of your lvl to make it fair. So for the first few hundred games I usually supported, because a team needs a support and surely no one else is gonna support if you won’t;D there are even servers for every continent (+ a Russian server, because Russians play so aggressive:D always 5 carries...), but there are always Russians on the European server, too. By the way, you’ll be learning a lot of Russian swearing if you turn your teamspeak on, because.. there will be Russians on your team almost every time and.. they will be swearing.. I gurantee it XDDD

About the killstreaks; you only get double- and triplekills (etc…) if there are only like 10 seconds between the kills. You can get up to a godlike streak (9 kills) and a beyond godlike steak (10+) in any time span if you just don’t die between the kills.. I can tell you it’s a pretty awesome feeling when your rampage is called and you know you just wiped the whole enemy team.. and everyone hears it:D oh yea remember the killstreak calls from cod like “double kill”, “triple kill”? dota’s are so much more epic:DD wait here’s a link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb7VuMhugiQ
Oh and you’ll love the music! Its like an epic mix of LotR and GoT.. the music also changes depending on what kind of game situation you are in. for example, when you are attacked, or attack someone else, the music will get louder and more dramatic.

The coolest things about dota are the leagues. There are internal leagues like “PPA China”, or “Russia KSD” and there are international leagues like “Starladder” and “ESL” (comparable to champions league in soccer). There’s also a world championship every year for the 4th year now. Its called TI (the international) and as you get into detail with dota, you will be able to understand what’s going on when you watch pro games. The commentators also get into it so much, it feels like a normal sports match:D here check this out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KjoJD1s05s
The prize money for the last international was more than 10mio $ and the first place got 51% (5mio devided by 5 players = 1 million each) Pro players can actually live off gaming.. that is their life..! Playing dota for a living!!:D I mean how awesome is that

so if you really wanna start DotA you’ll have to collect experience until.. let’s say.. you have like 1000 gaming hours minimum. That’s when it starts to become fun:D I myself have 896 hours now and I’m still learning. I’m telling you man.. that game actually is intense as hell;DD

eh....what?
There's no earthy way of knowing which direction we are going. There's no knowing where we're rowing, or which way the river's flowing. Is it raining, is it snowing? Is a hurricane a-blowing? Not a speck of light is showing, so the danger must be growing. Are the fires of Hell a-glowing? Is the grisly Reaper mowing?! YES! The danger must be growing! For the rowers keep on rowing! And there's certainly not showing ANY SIGNS THAT THEY ARE SLOWING!

Hit that Rep button, you know you want to.
