I loved the Compendium Games, simply because I knew I'd always get a Balanced Lineup, and I enjoy playing Support (even if it wasn't the one I wanted ._.).
If they brought back Compendium Games albeit with the option to choose which Hero you play as, I think this would lead to a mode with a much better quality of gaming.
Our rank is comparable Xyrus! :D I have 2215 as of now but have abandoned ranked for the all random of the normal match making. The ranked being based on win loss is supposed to make it bring people together into more conscientious teams; however! the game was designed like that before ranked and it had little effect on people. I don't know how many times I've went into all pick on ranked and all 4 of my team members have grabbed heroes (usually carries) within the first ten seconds leaving me with support. Not that I mind supporting but I tend to suck as the hard support (i.e. Ill last hit over the alchemist standing next to me if after 3 creep waves he has one last hit,plus i suck with mass warding) I have seen though that given the dota 50% win rate everyone has (its fair don't get me wrong) It seems exceptionally hard to actually raise your MMR once the calibration is done. Simply because if you lose the same amount you gain every time your just stuck. Also losing slightly less then your gain (lose 30 gain 31) you need to play hundreds of matches until you see any difference in match quality. Now the person I feel the worst for in all of this? The guy trying to program the system.
The system isn't perfect because of the team-based nature. But it does a good job at placing you at a level you should be at. If you have over 50% win rate, your MMR should go up accordingly. For example, my friends that have over 4500 MMR all have over 55% win rate. Their MMR also keeps rising, simple math would tell you they get +250MMR every 100 games at this rate of winning.
If you have plateau-ed in skill at around 50%, and you do not do serious training/learning, there is also no reason to expect your MMR to improve.
If you really deserve to be higher than where you are at, your win rate should be much higher than 50% simply because you're better than the players you're playing with. Blaming bad teammates is not valid because there is an equal chance of the other team having bad teammates.
it was pretty weird, all exept for maybe 1 or 2 of the calibration games were great. great team, great matches, no *******s who unpause the game. active communication even having fun talking with opponents.
and after i got my around 3300 MMR all the games that i played sucked. bad teams, no courier even, and all around *******s.
Calibration games are only to convert your hidden nonranked MMR into the ranked MMR system. You get a #### +/- uncertainty, and all calibration does is to reduce the uncertainty until the number they show you is held to be fairly accurate. I suspect they do this because the MMR distribution in ranked is a lot different than in non-ranked. For example, the average in non ranked is around 2250 iirc, but in ranked it could very well be 3000 or above, simply because beginners with low MMRs are still not level 13.
It has no relation to K/D/A or anything. It's based off of winning or losing. How many points you gain or lose is determined by estimated team skill. So if your team has a lower average MMR than the enemy team, and you win, you'll get more points. If you have a higher average MMR and you beat the enemy team, you won't get as many points.
Timminatorr Same issue, Ranked was good then every one got into it and it was just like normal. In fact its a bit worse because the the stats being recorded when someone abandons. At 4 to 5 its hard to win (had an amazing match a few days ago in which we did http://dotabuff.com/matches/477160771 though it was not ranked) even though it mentions stats will be recorded everyone leaves anyway. kinda makes it impossible to turn it around. (2 to 5 kinda thing)
If you want to solve your mmr problems, then just stack with some serious friends and play some serious dota. It's not a solo game, so I wouldn't care about my solo mmr even if I reach less than 1k.
And you must know that rising your mmr IS possible and completly natural, unless you're that kind of player that only loses mmr (well, if someone gains mmr, someone must lose it). I started with 3900 party mmr, went down to 3700 and now up to 4100.
I find completly no problems with win/lose based mmr system when I play with stack.

I don't see how you can blame the ranked MMR system for leavers. Assuming you are not a leaver yourself, there is a 40% chance your team gets a leaver, and 60% the other team does. Over a few dozen games, the existence of leavers at your MMR should benefit you.

Which is what I feel is for now the best way. As many said in this thread, its really hard for a computer program to effectively judge how well a player played, like for instance supports suiciding to save the carry, etc. Starcraft does use a similar system and for the most part it works, so I think that Valve is doing the best they can for now.
