So I have played a number of games, and usually I'm found playing support. I have played venomancer, crystal maiden, enchantress, ancient apperation and a few others. I want to get started with wind runner and lich also. My question is are these good supports? Is there any specific ones I should try?

Any support is a good support, but only when they synergise with your team. Here are some of the more commonly used supports in competitive Dota at the moment:

Crystal Maiden is a good all-rounder with a stun, slow and global mana.
Naga Siren is a fantastic disabler/escape with Song of the Siren and Ensnare and great base armor.
Shadow Demon and Leshrac are also picked up regularly as ganking supports.
Chen is similar to Enchantress since he controls creeps, but he is a lot less aggressive and more suited to assisting his team with Hand of God and Penitence.
Io is great when paired with a carry who can gank effectively ( Chaos Knight is the usual pairing)

I could list all of the supports and their pros but as I've said before, supports need to have skills that synergise with the rest of the team (like the Io/Chaos Knight combo I mentioned) so I can't say which ones to focus on.

I really recommend you try Jakiro and Shadow Shaman, because they are very fun supports :D I used to play a lot of shaman+juggernaut and it's FUN

Definitely check this out^
I would suggest starting out with supports that are very versatile, like naga / windrunner as they can perform most roles any team could need compared to very specific supports that only fit in certain situations. Lich is almost always useful as his chain frost can turn most teamfights and the new XP denial / boost helps out a lot too.

Good luck! :-)

I totally agree with the rest of your post, except for this part. IO is barely picked at all since the patch his picks must be in the single figures and I would put money on him having a negative win rate since the patch.

There really isn't any sort of fixed meta for any position at the moment. Teams are experimenting to try to find the right blend. For instance in the last week I've seen in pro games a support kunkka and a support Gyro. Everything is up in the air at the moment regarding who to pick in what position. But Crystal Maiden is the most picked, most popular, gets a hand of midas almost every game. I've seen Lion and venge picked a lot more as an aggressive roaming duo. Bane is picked less due to teams running pushing strats. Disruptor gets picked a bit. Of course Visage is another one who is picked or banned very regularly. Rubick and Nyx assasin is still popular.

Support Tusk if you want to try something unconventional.

Support Pugna is a bit squishy but can be an amazing support against certain opponents.

Visage and chen. These are imo THE best supports in the game in the hands of a decent player. They are not just the best in competetive, i have played games that were turned around by a random chen. I have been completely owned by a visage in lane. Familiars and soul assumption just do SO MUCH damage.

Other then that sand king, crystal maiden, shadow demon, keeper of the light, lion, nyx assasin, abbadon, rubick, shadow shaman, indying and bane in some cases are my favorites.

I do want to make a special mention to jakiro, that hero is so great in so many cases, he just wins games in teamfight, especially in combination with some heroes.
