Hello. I've been playing Smite a lot, and someone convinced me to try DotA. I'm liking it so far, but I'm having a hard time making the smite/DotA conversion, i.e. how long games are and how easily you die.
My first game, I midded as Tiny, going up against Lion. I had my *** handed to me. My next game was as Io, with a Bloodseeker in the Safe Lane. I broke even at 8, if I remember correctly (most kills and deaths on my team... gotta start playing more passive). I know the "only last hit creeps" rule, is there any god (sorry, Champion) that you guys would personally reccomend? Thanks. I appreciate all feedback.
The ones that are listed under the limited heroes selection tends to be a good place to start.
If you like killing things some heroes to try might be Drow Ranger, Viper or Skeleton King. Drow Ranger and Viper hit hard but die fairly easily, Skeleton King on the other hand is fairly tanky and has an (arguably) easy skill set, 3 passives (one of these passives can be used as an active) and an active stun.
If you are more into the support role e.g. keeping team mates alive and not needing much farm to be effective. You might want to have a look at Lion 2 stuns (I'm including hexing as a stun for simplicity sake) and a nuke with a way of regenerating (stealing) mana so you don't need to go back to the fountain often for mana. Warlock tends to be a reasonable hero as well as his skills tend to be handy with team fights and has a heal.
Every point i your primairy attribute gives you one damage. So strength heroes get damage from strength and so on.
Strength gives health and slight health regen.
Agility gives attack speed and armor.
Intelligence gives mana and slight mana regen.
Wisp is one of the best supports if not the best support in the game. But you need a lot of skill to use that potential. He is a great ganker with relocate when paired with something like tiny or CK (chaos knight)
You can use teather to save allies with relocate, burst heal them with magic stick or mechanism.
Do NOT, NOT for the love of god play sniper or drow ranger. They are easy to use against really bad players and beginners becouse all they do is attack, but they offer so little to the team and are really easy to kill.
I could reccomend some easy heroes but why not start with some harder ones? Wisp is great. I myself started playing a few months ago and instantly used sand king and had many great blink dagger into epicenter combos.
Try to find what role you like and where you are good at.

What about items? What are some good items noobs can use on all heroes that will be useful?
I'd really start playing as Venomancer.Great support, great ganks, great utility to the team. That's what I started to play with in W3, and it made me learn quick.

Good items for noobs? I dont really think there are any. Personally i hate shadow blade on heroes like viper and venomancer. Since it doesnt add much for the team on veno and it gives little damage for viper. That money could be better spent on a blink on veno or damage or survivability on viper. Just becouse new players are worse at the game becouse of lack of experience, doesnt mean that they should start building extremely to use stuff that isnt too effective. If you are an intelligent person you can make a blink on veno work to get off suprise gales and ultimates.
Ofcourse an inexperienced player will probably do better with a fast shadow blade on alchemist then a black king bar, since it can be very difficukt to use. I have a lot off difficulty using it effectively.
Also id like to reccomend Undying, hes tanky, can spam decay, has a heal/nuke, a great teamfight skill in tombstone, and a simple but effective ultimate.
Pu12e is implying for someone to say Dagon, actually.
For new players, Lion, Lina and Shadow Shaman could be nice. Slightly underperforming won't change your significance to the team that much, because disables are literally always good.
Ogre magi is also a pretty easy to use tanky support if you just feel like nuking peoples faces off. Jakiro can be pretty fun too since hes decently tanky and i so amazing in teamfight your allies will love you for picking him. (atleast i do, especially when im kunnka.)
