At what point...?

Hello, I am fairly new on this site, and I guess I'm fairly new to Dota 2 as well( 70 hrs. played). So far, I have been LOVING Dota 2, but I constantly hear the word "noob" being tossed around in pubs, whether its said by my teammates or the opposing team. Out of curiosity, at what point do you guys think someone is not a "noob", and can be considered advanced or "well-off"? Thanks in advance!

Umm "noob" is more like an insult, people will use it when someone plays bad, I.e: "look at that noob, he didn't hit an hook the entire game" and stuff like that.

You need to learn a lot, at that point people will stop telling you "noob", but remember, it is more of an insult.

If you play bad, you will always be called noob in pubs no matter what tier you play in. Being well-off means you should understand the mechanics of most if not all heros(not saying you have to play all of them well but you should know their spells and general builds). Being in high or very high also helps.

You're a noob if you're playing below the level of everyone else in the game i.e. you are hindering your team's chances of winning the game. Not necessarily the opposite of a good player, it could mean you're just having a bad game. I'd consider someone well-off if they can play reasonably well with at least half of the heroes, and all of the roles (don't have to be great, but you should feel semi-comfortable randoming or playing what's picked in a CM game) and understand how to play against all of them.

Keep in mind that I'm not usually in higher bracket games, so I can get by with just knowing the hero mechanics and a basic idea of the build and the role. Nothing worse than 1-hero "sniper/drow or feed" type players IMO.

Well in pubs, you have to pretty much dominate every game (so someone doesn't rage and go on about how noob their team was even if they had been feeding the entire game), get kills but without killing anything so you don't get accused of kill stealing, don't pick supports because it is a belief among a lot of pub players that supports don't do anything even if you ward and buy courier and potentially save them while you die in the process.
Not following what other people think is how you should build for example I was playing a quas-wex invoker a while back and got flamed for not building an exort invoker no pun intended.

In all seriousness, some general tips might be, try not to die often. If you are playing support, make sure to actually support your carry and don't steal his kills or creep kills as a support you shouldn't need much gold to be effective so you are better off trying to harass the enemy and stop them from getting gold, make sure you don't over commit e.g. only do it when it is reasonably safe to do so.

Don't auto-attack unless you are trying to take a tower as you will mess with the creep equilibrium but pushing it towards the enemy tower which would make it harder to farm the lane safely as if the lane is pushed you are further away from the safety of your own tower also it will make you easier to be ganked. For example if you are on the radiant bottom lane and you pushed the lane then the enemy mid might go through your forest and come up behind you or even just go through the river and it would make it harder to escape.
Also when you auto-attack creeps it may screw up your team mates ability to last hit or make it easier for the enemy to deny the creep as your hitting may be predictable.

When playing carry practice last hitting. Know when you can contribute to a team fight, sometimes you may just be a burden and you will die quickly as you won't be able to do much as you do not have the levels or items to be effective.

Read guides to get a general gist of how to play the hero you want to use, practice with bots with that hero first before trying a pub game.
Especially with heroes that require a little bit more skill to use e.g. Earthshaker and his fissure, if you are in the wrong position you will screw someone over. Just the other day I screwed up a fissure and stopped an ally from potentially escaping from a Huskar
Kunkka, if you never land a torrent or boat you will most probably be called a noob
Pudge, landing hooks are difficult if the enemy isn't stunned and you have never played him before, also leaving rot on when you don't need to isn't very bright
Invoker the number of spells he has is almost ridiculous and if you don't know when and how to use them properly you will be most definitely called a noob

tl;dr; make sure you know how to play the hero at least in theory

Basically you will probably still get called a noob a lot of the time whether it is your own fault or not but above lists some potential ways of avoiding it.
The best way would probably play with medium bots until you are satisfied you can beat them most of the time and perhaps practice your last hitting with hard or unfair bots. Then move onto pubs, watching pro games can help as well and trying to understand why they did something.

I always link this comic whenever someone don't know what they're talking about noob. And by that i mean 90% of pub players.
