My friend is a Windrunner player, enjoys the range of skills she has for harass, support/chasing, escape and tower bashing.
I'm not too familiar with the hero so I looked at various guides and so on to help her. Bearing in mind she is a beginner so I wasn't going for a pro team build, I mainly play vs. CPU and the odd PvP with her.
I initially went with:
Power Treads
Maelstrom
Crystalis
Oblivion Staff
with the intention of building towards Mjollnir.
But after playing her myself, I went for:
Phase Boots
Oblivions
Orchid
Crystalis
by which time she was hitting for 250+, nearly 500 on a crit.
Basically, I'm wondering what items I should recommend to up WR's damage to push her more towards that semi-carry role? This isn't meant to be the most appropriate build for her, just something fun we can run together. I tend to play a support in lane with her if that factors in.
The thing with Windrunner is that you don't need to really stack agility or attack speed on her - her ult gives you a long burst of max attack speed (although you obviously can't use it all the time).
It's not a recommended build cos it lacks utility, but something like:
The Aghanim's you wouldn't normally build as a carry item, but it reduces your damage loss from your ult, and reduces the CD to 1/4. Crystalys works well with high attack speed, and after that its all about stacking intelligence/damage as much as possible. Maelstrom isn't recommended because that's more about farming/attack speed.
You can actually beat a lot of carries with this build cos of Windrun - unless they have MKB of course...
Thanks for the advice. I realised Maelstrom wasn't the way to go as she lacked the damage for multiple attacks to make use of it, but with her being an INT hero I wasn't sure things like Yasha/Manta would help.
Hi there. I LOVE windrunner playing style so i give you my opinion. Surely it depends on the role you have in the match, but the initial problem with her is mana. After boots i take some for mana regen, even before the boots upgrade cause third skill can let you upgrade them later, not too much later but not as soon as other carachters.
Sando is right. Orchid is the really important item you have to upgrade, it gives you 150% mana regen, attack speed and damage, and stats, and silence, use it often! All without requiring secret, that's not a little thing, a side shop is perfect also, only recipe from base use it! Than you have to play as the match requires, sometime warding was my job you know, when you ward money are not so uch cause you have to left creeps lane often but try to gank stun and earn good assist is a good way to solve money problem, than care about damage, boots are perfect, normally i play supportive style so i go through mecha/pipe, vyse/shiva. In sei carry i would do desolator
Thanks again for your posts, seems to confirm my thoughts that Orchid is the way to go with WR. Hadn't thought about MKB, takes all the negatives out of her ultimate as far as I can see.
As I said, it's not a super team pro build, my friend is just getting into DotA so I just want her to have fun. She seems to have settled on WR due to her range of skills (attempts to switch her onto QoP or Mirana are so far failing) so I'm just looking for ways to up her damage so she can get those flashy kill streaks!
Returning on topic, either a Desolator rush or a fast Monkey King Bar (after a survivability item like Drum of Endurance or Mekansm, maybe) are good choices, in my opinion. Otherwise, if you want to be useful in the mid game go for an Orchid Malevolence as someone else suggested; it also fixes your mana problems.
