Just wanted to know your guys opinion on Blizzard's move to the MOBA scene as it was previously a user based custom game that clearly has evolved into something huge. What do you guys think about the move to MOBA for Blizzard? I think Value and Icefrog was a huge thing, but Blizzard alone makes my knees shake. Especially growing up playing both Warcraft and Starcraft and now they put both together to add a new spin on my favorite game style, Moba. The idea of joining three communities is stunning, bringing all the original Warcraft/Starcraft players - The Blizzard Players - The Moba scene. Into one big thing seems like a great idea. Will it be better than Dota 2? Probably not, but the ideas that they have to bring both classic games (games I think were ahead of their time and very underrated games in the 2000-2010) onto a familiar field is amazing.

I'm done with Blizzard, and here is another moment of them capitalizing on someone elses accomplishments.

WoW = Runscape?

You crazy bro.

WoW = Everquest if anything. And WoW pretty much made the MMO market what it is today.

Silly people saying blizzard has no originality ;<.

I dunno. Blizzard has become less than what is used to be. Financially they are great, on a personal level, they are money *****s and really have trouble coming up with anything new. WoW... I don't see how anyone could play the game. Grinding is not, and never was, fun. And them making a dota style game? I'm not impressed. I don't call it a moba. "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena" is both incorrect in its words and sounds stupid.

Blizzard is a company that buys smaller companies with a great idea, then reform it to appeal to their fanbase and release it as their own game.

The Diablo games were made by Condor Studios, who were bought out by Blizzard and then soon after they finished the Diablo 2 expansion, most quit and you know them as Runic Games, the makers of Torchlight. The other remnants of Diablo who did not become a part of Runic Games, I hear joined Project Offset which later became S2 Games, the makers of the Savage series and Heroes of Newerth. Diablo 3 to my knowledge, none of the same developers.

World of Warcraft was actually an unnamed title being produced in France when Blizzard saw what they were doing, bought it out and named it their European branch. Later, it was unveiled as World of Warcraft created by Blizzard Entertainment.

I have never heard or found, the latter being the much more important factor, anything to say that they did not develop StarCraft or WarCraft entirely within their own company. Though you do have to admit, Diablo being known as the best PC game to ever be made and World of Warcraft being the most popular game in the world, or at least the western countries, Blizzard got lucky enough to find people willing to sell their work.

I know, it helps them become great, but it just doesn't sit right with me. Not to mention how much they are against the modding community of which I was a part of in Starcraft. This was the same for Warcraft II, Diablo 1 and 2, Warcraft III, World of Warcraft and Starcraft II. The Starcraft base for both the original and the sequel, know this all too well. In the original Starcraft, many sites that hosted modding activities and people spreading around secrets about the gaming code, were issued the threat of lawsuits several times until people found a workaround by modifying their Terms of Agreement. They have even blindly shut down maps and/or projects in Starcraft II for things like foul language (in a Teen rated game), names/story used (even though we can use all their models, sounds, etc), having ideas too close to their own (several MOBA-style games) and in the end, buy out anyone working on anything they want their hands on. The most popular story being the creator of SOTIS was a member of the Blizzard DOTA team from the start of the project.

Anyways, in the end, yes. Blizzard has no originality.

EDIT: Sorry had some of my information regarding S2 Games jumbled up.

To be fair most major developers aren't creating "new concepts" themselves. The number of sequels and reboots of franchises is way higher compared to new ideas from developers. A lot of the best new ideas are being made by smaller developers. If a company snipes fresh talent with good ideas and gives them the funding and resources to create their ideas I don't see any problem with that. Its just putting out a better game.

I didn't either until Starcraft 2 came out. I said the same thing. Then when I read the ToA for the game and map making, I literally have not really play it at all. They have the right to seize your property and either shut it down or make a profit off it, regardless of what you say. The same goes for several members of the modding community for Starcraft recently, people who weren't even involved in the big scandal at the time, were taken just for having their alias mentioned.

Blizzard isn't supporting new ideas, they want to make a profit or nobody gets to. Being a gaming company comes first, then you can play businessman afterwards.
