I've never actually played DOTA 2, but I have watched quite a bit of streaming, both professional tournaments (Go Zenith!) and pub matches from pros (personal favorite is Blitzdota). I have seen nearly every single item bought except for Sange and Yasha. I know I'm new and all and maybe I'm just missing it, but is it really that bad? The greater maim effect seems really useful, and the stats it provides would help nearly every single agility carry. Just think of Drow's arrow slow with the maim, or PL's illusions procing slows left and right. Is it because its expensive, or Manta Style is just better, or what? I'm seriously puzzled why this item isn't a prominent pub stomping choice.

I'm using Sange and Yasha on heroes like Bloodseeker, Slardar, etc.

I like the item, it's good, the maim is really helpful to catch fleeing enemies.

But later on, HH and Manta Style, of course, way more useful.

Sange and Yasha is a very mediocre item at best. It's not stat-efficient whatsoever (a Bracer + Wraith Band + Null Talisman provide roughly the same amount of STR/AGI/+damage for about a third of the price).

The movement speed is also nice, but you can get that with just a Yasha alone, and like you said, Manta Style is a much better option for pretty much any Yasha carrier. The Greater Maim effect is only useful on a handful of heroes that need to chase but have no reliable CC to do so with, such as the aforementioned Bloodseeker or Razor. That, plus the fact that illusions cannot proc Greater Maim, makes Sange a very subpar item overall. Now that Sange builds into Heaven's Halberd, there is even less of a reason to build SnY, unless you are planning to disassemble it into Manta Style + HH later in the game.

TL;DR SnY isn't cost-efficient, very few heroes can make use of the slow, and other items outclass it easily.

Hmm. Thanks for your input. It's really sad that illusions can't use the maim effect :C But yeah, I see your reasoning.

S n Y just like stated early isn't enough stats for how much you spend on it. If purchased quickly it's viable as long as you dissemble it into halibard and manta. Best with str carries who need attack speed

There are just way better items to get than an S&Y. Manta is just sooo good!

Yeah it doesn't seem to be like the old days when sange and yasha were elite, only because you could stack the yasha movespeed bonus. I remember the days when I would syllabear with sny BoT and another yasha for 522 ms.

I am guessing that when they made Manta not have to use difusal anymore it became much more popular?
I don't know cuz I wasn't around when that change came.

From what I know, people only get SnY as a fall-off item. Something you get when you're losing like **** and you need a solid item to boost your edge a bit. Sure, it works to give you a bit of momentum, but it's really not that good compared to Manta Style or even Heaven's Halberd, which both need components of Sange and Yasha.

I also noticed that. I used Sange and Yasha lately on skeleton king, but now I prefer Manta Style because it gives me just way better stats, especially in combination with Skull Basher. After I got those 2 items, Power Treads and Armlet of Mordiggian, I easily carry games. I also love those critting illusions.
The fast way to fast Skeleton King.
