Faceless Void is one of the hardest Carries on the game. I have tons of experience with this hero and i would say that i am relatively good at this hero. Building him with the first build is preferably. For the first build you can always swap out Time Lock with Backtrack if you feel like it's necessary. The second build is when you get nothing in lane and you cant get Battlefury as a farming item and you need to get something cheaper. Malestrom can help you get last hits in the jungle rather effectively, but keep in mind that it is not nearly as effective as Battlefury so if you can pick up a Battlefury definitely do so. The third build is a very rare thing and that is only to be used if you have the hard carry rolo taken care of already or if you are trying to finish the game in 20 minutes. You can effectively get kills in the mid game and serve more of a purpose than a passive farming void. This however is not something you WANT to do.
