Who is Meepo?

Meepo the Geomancer is an agility carry who is great at farming, pushing, and providing pressure in the lanes. Meepo is also a great teamfighter due to his ultimate skill Divided We Stand giving up to four additional members to the teamfight (with Aghanim's Scepter). Unfortunately, Meepo suffers from low base damage and poor stat gain. This makes him squishy and easy to out-deny in the early game. This later pays off in the mid and late games, though, as Meepo becomes a monstrous pusher and powerful farmer.

About me...

This is my first guide on DotaFire. My name is Jon Sauce on Steam. Meepo is one of my favorite heroes in Dota and I felt how I play him should be on DotaFire.

Lore

"If you ask me, life is all about who you know and what you can find. When you live up in the Riftshadow Ruins, just finding food can be tough. So you need to cut corners, you need to scrounge, you need to know your strengths. Some of the beasts up there can kill you, so you need a way to trap the weak and duck the strong. On the upside, the ruins have history, and history is worth a lot to some people. There use to be a palace there, where they had all these dark rituals. Bad stuff. If you survived the ceremony, they would shatter a crystal and split your soul into pieces. They made great art though! Sculptures and such. Let me tell you: sometimes you stumble onto some of those old carvings. Take a pack full of those to town and sell them, then get yourself food for a few weeks. If luck is really on your side, you might find a Riftshadow crystal. Get it appraised and start asking around. Someone always knows some crazy fool looking for this kind of thing. If all else fails, sell it to a Magus the next time one's in town. They love that stuff. Still, whatever you do, be careful handling those crystals. You do not want one to go off on you. It really hurts."

Pros and Cons of Meepo

Pros:
- Great farmer in the mid to late game
- Poof is one of the strongest AoE nukes in the game doing up to 1400 DAMAGE with 5 Meepos at max level (assuming that you hit both times)
- Can be all over the map at once
- Geostrike helps your last hitting and the slow stacks, allowing you to do a 100% slow at max level with 5 Meepos
- Unlike other carries, Meepo doesn't depend on DPS items to reach his full damage potential
- Is a natural Mekansm carrier, allowing your supports to buy other support items for the team
- Is also a situational Pipe of Insight carrier
- Can solo Roshan after acquiring Vladmir's Offering
- Your clones allow you to farm the jungle and lane at the same time
- Poof can be used to teleport across the map
- With Boots of Travel, Meepo can split push like Nature's Prophet or Tinker since each Meepo's boots have individual cooldowns
- Built in 35% spell resistance
- Respawn time reduced by your ultimate

Cons:

- Targeted first in teamfights
- Requires microing skills
- Low base damage
- Easy to kill by either singling out one Meepo or using AoE nukes
- Easy to out-deny in the early game
- People will call you a noob if you don't do very well
- People will be very reluctant to letting you play Meepo
- Tranquil Boots can no longer be disassembled

Skills

Earthbind:
Range: 500/750/1000/1250
Radius: 220
Duration: 2
Cooldown 20/16/12/8 Mana 100

Earthbind is Meepo's first skill. He throws a net at an enemy and it holds them in place.

Things to know about Earthbind:

- First, it has an AoE. Meaning one net can potentially catch more than one person.

- Second, it has a solid 100 mana cost at all levels, so if you aren't very good at conserving your mana remember that it always costs 100 mana.

- Third, the skill is slightly delayed and has a slow missile speed. You might want to practice landing the skill on moving targets and practice tab-skilling (mentioned later in the guide)

Poof:
Range: Global
Radius: 375
Damage: 80/100/120/140
Cooldown 12/10/8/6 Mana 80

Poof is Meepo's second skill. Meepo teleports to another clone or to himself (you don't go anywhere if you teleport to yourself). It does damage on both departure and arrival. You can teleport to illusions, too. This is Meepo's bread and butter skill. Use it to clear creep waves, clear jungle camps, or nuke enemy heroes. At max level it is a pretty spammable skill and has an 80 mana cost at all levels. You should max this skill first in my own opinion.

Geostrike:
Movement Speed Slow: 5%/10%/15%/20%
Damage per Second: 7/14/21/28
Duration: 2

Geostrike is Meepo's third skill. It is a passive ability that deals its damage and slows on-hit. I generally max this second as the damage and slow not only help secure kills but also helps with last hitting.

Divided We Stand:
Number of Meepos: 2/3/4 (3/4/5)*
Respawn Speed: 10%/20%/30%
Can be Improved by Aghanim's Scepter (* shows the improved values). Adds an extra Meepo. Grants 100% shared attribute percentage.

*Meepo can level up his ultimate at 3/10/17 instead of 6/11/16. As represented in my guide.

Divided We Stand is Meepo's ultimate and his most recognizable skill. It creates a clone of himself that shares 30% of his stats and his shoes.

Things to know about Divided We Stand:

- Each Meepo can use active abilities from Boots of Travel and Phase Boots individually. This does not apply to Arcane Boots, however, which can only be used by the main Meepo.

- All Meepos share the Power Treads form that the main Meepo uses. Individual clones cannot change the treads.

- Clones benefit from the stats leveling, but not from items that grant attributes.

- Aghanim's Scepter is undroppable once acquired.

- Even if you didn't level up Divided We Stand, picking up Aghanim's Scepter will still provide you with an extra Meepo.

Micro? What is this? I don't even...

If you are familiar with RTS games, you should know what microing is. Essentially, micro is the set of skills required to control multiple units independently at the same time. Sound hard? It can be. Meepo is considered micro intensive as each clone has its own health, mana, and cooldowns. It would be inefficient to try to click on each individual clone and move it to attack or use a skill; you'd be fumbling around and getting yourself killed. For that reason, we must learn control groups.

My personal keyboard setup: CLASSIFIED STUFF HERE ;,P

General Keys:

WASD: Moves my camera. (I don't like the edge panning in Dota. It seems too rough. That's just my preference though.)

Q,E,R,F,(T,G): Spells. F = Ultimate. T+G are for heroes with more than 4 skills.

Z,X,C,V,B,N: Items

F1: Courier

`: Shop

M: Attack Move

Y: Chat Wheel

.: Voice Chat

Control Group Keys:

Tab: Control group tabbing

Space: Main hero (I got this from HoN don't judge.)
This helps with all heroes as the spacebar is large and easy to hit which makes focusing the camera easy. In Meepo's case, it'll help when you need to use active items (like Mekansm, Blink Dagger, Ethereal Blade) as you can quickly select the main Meepo to use them.

1: All units
This is a simple key that doesn't get in the way but is easy to press for selecting all units. I use this key 99% of the time when playing Meepo unless I'm trying to Blink Poof or move units to the jungle or base.

2: All OTHER units
This selects all units minus your main hero. Useful for controlling clones when you send the main Meepo back to base to pick up items/heal up. Very important for Blink Poofing. Also doesn't get in the way too much.

3-8: Control Groups
There are a handfull of ways to group Meepo. You could make each key for a separate Meepo. Set up laning groups and jungling groups. Do whatever you need for these. Past 6 they keys will be hard to reach....

Be comfortable with your keys!!! This is "key" (get it?) for playing Meepo well.

So what is a Control Group?

A control group is a user defined grouping of units. It allows you to set a unit(s) to a key and be able to switch to it quickly. I personally don't use control groups, as I can micro my clones without them. That doesn't mean you shouldn't, though. Having control groups can help out A LOT.

How to Setup a Control Group

1: Know your keys.

2: Select the units you want.

3: Hold control (ctrl) and hit the key needed.

4: Your micros should be set. TEST THEM.

For the most part, Dota 2 is really good about remembering your micros. Make sure to test them in practice lobbies to see what's comfortable and to make sure everything is in working order.

TBH, Meepo is not as hard as everyone thinks he is. It's just a matter of learning how to control him.

Tab-Skilling, Control Group Tabbing, Blink Poofing

I personally don't use control groups when playing Meepo. I control group tab. By control group tabbing (from here on referred to as tabbing), you can control each Meepo independently with the use of one button. Before playing Meepo, I suggest you learn which keys you have for selecting your main hero, all units, all other units, and control group tabbing.

Tab-Skilling:

Tab-skilling is what I call using your skills consecutively by quickly switching between units (your clones in this instance). You can tab-skill your Poof to increase the damage of your nuke. You can tab-skill to stack instances of your Earthbind. To tab-skill, you must select all the units you want to use then quickly tab and hit your skill to quickly stack up your skills.

Blink Poofing:

With a Blink Dagger and tab-skilling, Meepo can pull off an extremely powerful initiation known as the blink poof. The idea of blink poofing involves channeling Poof on your clones (by quickly tab-skilling), aiming at your main Meepo. While that is happening, use the main Meepo's Blink Dagger to blink to on top of an enemy. If you are fast enough, you might be able to land Earthbind on your enemy to lock them in place while you nuke them.

Items

Starting Items:

- Tango and Healing Salve are your basic health regeneration. Use these to heal after taking damage. You can use the salve on your clones.

- Ring of Protection is a cheap source of armor and builds into Vladmir's Offering.

- Iron Branch will give you stats and will build into Mekansm.

Early Game:

- Ring of Basilius will give both mana regen and armor to you and your clones via the aura it provides. It also will give your main Meepo +6 damage.

- Power Treads are Meepo's boots of choice. They give stats, attack speed, and movement speed. You generally want to keep your treads switched to strength to give you the tankiness to stay alive. Switching to agility won't really benefit you that much because Meepo's damage is so low anyway.

Core 1:

- I like to build Mekansm first on Meepo because you already have the branches needed for the Headdress and Buckler and the regeneration aura is useful for sustaining you and your clones. Mekansm gives +4 health regeneration in an aura around you, +5 to all stats, +5 armor, and the armor and healing active effect. When building a Mek, buy the Headdress first. The HP regen aura is more beneficial than the armor active of Buckler.

- After I get Mek, I usually go for Aghanim's Scepter since it gives you your additional clone and, more importantly, it gives 100% of your stats to your clones. Aghanim's also gives +10 to all stats, +200 health, and +150 mana.

- Vladmir's Offering is a great item for Meepo and you already have the Ring of Basilius needed for it. It gives 16% lifesteal, 15% damage, +5 armor, and +.08 mana regeneration in an aura.

Core 2:

- By rushing the Aghanim's Scepter, you will greatly accelerate your farming ability and will be able to participate in earlier fights.

- After getting your Aghanim's Scepter, snag a Blink Dagger. You can use it to blink-poof (mentioned above). You can also use BD to escape.

Late Game 1:

- Heart of Tarrasque is a great item on Meepo as it gives you a whopping +40 strength, +300 health, and gives you that awesome 2% of your max health regeneration that allows you to push like a monster. Remember that the health and regen only benefit the main Meepo, so when you are taking down a structure, send in the main Meepo because he can tank the tower with the regeneration.

- After you get your Heart, you can go ahead and sell your Power Treads to get Boots of Travel. With BoT you can split push even more. Since every clone has a separate cooldown, you can have one clone tp, poof to it, clear the creep wave, use another to tp back to base, and poof back.

Late Game 2

- With Ethereal Blade, you gain a whopping +40 agility, +10 strength, and +10 intelligence. You also gain the ethereal form active, that does an 80% slow and amplifies magical damage by 40%. You will absolutely DESTROY enemies with your poof. The downside is that you can't hit the enemy with your autos, which doesn't matter when you have poof.

Situational Items:

- Drum of Endurance gives decent stats and is fairly affordable. It gives a nice movement speed aura and the active effect that is useful for escaping highly mobile enemies or rushing into teamfights that you aren't actively in.

- Force Staff is useful if the enemy team is constantly singling out one of your clones or teammates. It also gives +10 intelligence, which is handy if you find yourself starved for mana.

- Pipe of Insight is a handy thing to have if the enemy has lots of nukers. Meepo already has 35% spell resistance. With a pipe, you gain an additional +30% spell resistance as well as a +4 HP regen aura and the Barrier active effect.

Luxury:

- Eye of Skadi is an amazing item on Meepo. Is gives tons of stats, health, and mana. It also gives an extra slow via its passive. It is, however, very expensive. Also the slows can't go past 100% so the slow isn't so utilized.

- Scythe of Vyse a.k.a. Sheepstick, is a great item as it provides lots of int, mana regen, and the hex which is useful to the entire team. It is also very expensive.

Armlet? On Meepo?:

I added Armlet of Mordiggian because of the active effect. It gives +31 damage, +10 attack speed, and (more importantly) +25 strength on top of its regular bonuses. If you get armlet before you get your Heart, you can leave the main Meepo with it on at base and utilize the +25 strength boost on your clones to push. After you get your Heart, you can leave it on all the time and push even harder. You will be significantly tankier with the +65 strength from both Heart and Armlet's active, allowing you to take on even the hardest hitters on the enemy team. To be honest, it is a fun item on Meepo, but it isn't all that good of an item on him. Grab it if you want to have fun and don't care if your teammates will be confused with your choice of items.

Gameplay

Meepo's best lane is the safe lane (top for Dire, bottom for Radiant) as it allows for easy access to the jungle and has a side shop that you can use to build your Power Treads and Ring of Basilius. Before level 3, you have to play it safe as Meepo. You are very squishy and don't forget it. Try to use Poof to snag a few last hits if you are having trouble and try to sap xp until you get your first clone. Once you get your first clone, you can start farming the jungle. Do not get your support to stack the camps until you get more levels in Poof because you can die to the neutrals. It is generally a good idea to lane with someone who can safely farm the lane while you jungle because you don't want to stay in lane for very long unless you are clearing the creep wave. This is because your clones can sap xp from your lane partner since they earn it independently. You can aim for a kill early if your lane partner has a reliable stun/root. When they snag someone, tab-poof on the person and smack them a few time with Geostrike to finish them off. Otherwise, try to farm up your Mekansm/ Aghanim's Scepter. Once you get both, you should be able to quickly farm up your Vladmir's Offering, Heart of Tarrasque/ Ethereal Blade, Boots of Travel and any additional items you may need. Once you get your Heart, you should be able to split push pretty hard against the enemy team. Try to help out your team in teamfights by popping your Mek to heal teammates, earthbinding enemies, and poof-nuking enemies to kill them. Even if you get off to a bad start, once Meepo gets to the late game, you will be able to catch up with your superior farming ability.

Friends and Foes

Meepo will strongly benefit from disablers/initiators. Meepo should lane with someone who can hold his/her own if needed, as Meepo doesn't stay in lane unless he is pushing or killing the creep wave to avoid xp starving his partner.

Some of these might fit that moniker.

Silencer
Enigma
Tidehunter
Jakiro
Windranger
etc.

Generally, those with large AoE disables, AoE Nukes, strong solo-target disables, and those who can deny you farm will counter Meepo.

Some of these might fit that moniker.

Earthshaker: Your worst enemy. DO NOT PICK MEEPO IF THERE IS AN EARTHSHAKER ON THE ENEMY TEAM!!!!!
Lich: Denies you farm. His ulti wrecks you.
Tidehunter: His ulti will also wreck you.
Riki: His smoke cloud will both blind and silence you. Bad combo on Meepo.
Kunkka: His cleave is dangerous. Will force you out of lane (losing you farm).
etc.

The End...

This is the end. Feel free to make changes to my skill build and or items if you feel necessary. Go Meepwn them!
