Boots and you

There a plethora of boots to choice from in dota, each with it's own special use. This should help you pick your boots for your situation.

Power Treads: Good boots that give more attack speed and some stats. These are recommend items on a lot of the valve guides. These boots are mediocre, but they do give you the power of tread switching. The basis of tread switching is that if you need damage, you are on your primary stat, if you need HP you are on STR treads, before you cast a spell you go to INT, and if you are using a regen item, you go to AGI.

Phase Boots: Good boots that give +24 damage and an active that is good for chasing/escaping. These are some of the better boots for carries due to the damage boots and the move speed. Also consider these of slower heros due to the active.

Arcane Boots: These are great support boots, they give you more max mana, and the ability to give everyone around you 135 mana (only gives you 100 mana due to the mana cost of using the boots). Almost every team need at least one. Consider this if you are a strength hero who uses spells a lot.

Boots of Speed: Your normal brown boots, these can get you through a lot. You don't always have to upgrade your boots, i've seen pro players go through 50% of the game sitting on just these bad boys. Consider not upgrading if you are getting a farming item I.E: Battle Fury Radiance

Boots of Travel: Too expensive to get early game, but are great for your surplus gold late game. They give the most movespeed of any item in the game and also give you an infinite number of TP scrolls.

Tranquil Boots: These used to be some of the best boots in the game, but since 6.79 farming heros can't pick them up anymore. These give armour and HP regen as well as the second highest movespeed of any item in the game AS WELL AS being the cheapest of all upgraded boots. These are really only viable on supports now, DO NOT get these on farming heros.

How to pick your boots

You have to look at your heros strengths and weaknesses and find what boots work well for you. If you are a hero like Tidehunter, Arcane Boots are the way to go. If you are a hero like Faceless Void, Power Treads are for you, that way you can proc more bashes. But, if you are Phantom Assassin you want Phase Boots to crit harder.

TL DR: Use this chart.
