Okay I've done a thread like this before with Luna.

And yes I could check a guide, but everyone plays heroes differently, so I want to get tips from many players!

Okay there are a few things I need to know mainly:

How to use Meld effectively
How to level skills
What items to build
And some basic tips for playing her: What to do in teamfights, what skills to activate etc.

Also just any basic skill usage and what to be doing when.

The reason I want to know this stuff is that I have recently joined a team, and have been assigned the mid role, I don't generally like mid heroes but TA seems my kinda hero.

I seriously don't understand Meld well btw, it's good for escaping the first time or two, but after the enemy has dust it seems kinda useless to me.

Any tips would be nice, also in general: "what to do in the mid lane" would be nice to know as this is a big change for me.

I think you use Blink Dagger next to the enemy, Meld and then autoattack him to get the bonus damage ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The problem with Meld is that the lower the range of Psi Blades, the harder is to hit it without a Blink Dagger.

I like to get Bottle + Magic Wand + Phase Boots -> Blink Dagger -> Black King Bar + Desolator
If you have an advantage, get Desolator then Black King Bar, but if not, do the opposite. For later damage, Daedalus, Monkey King Bar and Butterfly are your primary options.

About the skill build, I like to get
Refraction / Psi Blades / Refraction / Meld / Refraction / Psionic Trap / Refraction and them max Meld.
If you are facing a hard opponent, max Psi Blades right after Refraction.

There are 2 ways to play templar assasin.
The blink build and the racecar build.
Boots depends on the game, do you need chase and what is the pace of the game?

With the blink build you go drums into yasha, and follow that up with deso/manta/bkb/mkb, whatever is needed.
Personally i like the blink build much more, but the racecar build is certainly less risky and better in slower paced games.
So basicly after early core you get deso as an early damage item, or MKB against evasion, or BKB if needed. Crit is also really strong since she already hits so hard. Its especially good with deso if you can get away with it.

Starting items is either bottle rush or wraith band if you need early damage.

For skillbuild you get refraction at lvl 1 for damage and the block, at lvl 2 you usually get psi blades for the splash.
Then you proceed with maxing refraction followed by maxing meld. Level your ultimate whenever possible.

Meld is used for offensive purposes or dodging projectiles.

I'm by no means an experienced TA player so correct me if there's something drastically wrong :P

First off, TA is a quite situational mid laner, she's a lane dominator who relies on her Refraction to trade effectively and having a higher damage for last hits. However, without it, she's really squishy. Also, she has no other way to get last hits aside from her her auto-attacks. So, don't pick her against DoT or someone who can make it impossible to get last-hits with auto-attacks ( Razor, Brewmaster, Troll Warlord etc.). Also don't pick her against high armour enemies.

About Meld, it gives you massive armour reduction and bonus damage if you break the invisibility with an attack. You can use it with Blink Dagger to blink next to enemy, use Meld and attack. This gives you a HUGE physical damage output with Refraction.

Generally you want to max Refraction first to get the extra hits it takes to break and the higher damage and hits. You need one point in Psi Blades at level 2. I usually take ult at lvl 6 but then leave upgrading it further until I have maxed other skills, but taking it always when possible gives you better map control. After maxing Refraction focus on Meld. Then after that Psi Blades and then ult. I like to take a second point in blades before the second level in meld as it makes easier to land those meld hits, but that's just what I like to do.

Well I'm a Phase Boots TA-player, but power treads are completely viable. I think the most important item for TA is Blink Dagger as it lets you have a way to make an initiation. Then you might need BKB against stuns as you are really squishy. Desolator is really good as its -armour lets you three-shot supports. Manta is good against silences, slows, dust etc. Butterfly against physical damage, AC for armour and even more -armour. Daedalus for the crits. There are a lots of builds for TA but these are what comes to mind for me if I think of items for TA. Of course, you need Bottle, Magic Wand and TP scrolls.

About mid laning in general, here's a really good guide by Chaq:

This might be a bit long.

I play TA every once in awhile, so I think I know a good bit about her playstyle. There are a few ways to level her up. If your just starting, I would recommend something like Q/E/Q/W/Q/R/Q/E/E/W/R/W/W/E/U/R. The main difference from the standard TA build is switching out maxing Meld after Refraction ASAP with getting 2 extra levels in Psi Blades, because it's easy to mess up a meld attack with only one level in E. Once you get more comfortable with blink meld strikes, you could probably switch to the standard build. Meld is really powerful, but if you can't land it then it's a waste.

Midgame is your game, don't chase pricey items early on. The only exception that I can think of is Desolator. The highest costing items otherwise should be in the 2000 range. Think Blink Dagger, Crystalys, and your boots of choice(Phase or Treads). Of course, get a Bottle as early as you can.

One thing to think about as a TA player is Rosh. Meld is such a good skill for taking out rosh, combined with a good carry.

Some(most) people see TA as a BKB hero, but I disagree. It's a matter of opinion, I wish I would have gotten it sometimes but other times the gold was certainly better spent when I put it into a fast desolator.

A couple things about Meld. It is so good, SO GOOD. The only reason not to get it after refraction is if you can't land it without extra range. First off, a lot of extra damage for one attack. The debuff is only applied for the extra damage, so your own attack damage will not get magnified for the initial attack, but the 200 will. It has the fastest fade time in the game, at 0.001 second fade time. Getting stunned or damaged will not break the invisibility, but any ability that forces you to move does. Also, use it to disjoint stuns, or any projectile you don't want hitting you. It works very well.

For the endgame, the 2 big items will be a Daedalus, Manta Style and a Butterfly. AC and Heart are also good if you need survivability.

Last but not least, Psionic Trap is a great pub ability. All you need is the first set of wards, and then you can keep track of the runes yourself. Place them on the rune spots, in the Rosh pit(if the enemy team has an early Rosh hero, then you need a rosh trap at about 10-15 minutes. Maybe earlier if they have an Ursa), and anti-gank spots. Put them in choke points, so the enemy doesn't have a chance to go around them. As the game wears on, place them in the jungle, in spots around lanes, around the ancients, in the secret shops, and save a few for chasing. TA is better at keeping track of enemy movements than most pub supports in the late game.

Everyone else made good points. The last thing I have for you is an extension on my talk for Traps, here are good places to lay them.

Thanks to you and everyone who helped :)

I tried a game last night, it didn't go great but we all have to start somewhere! I maxed Refraction and Meld the Psi Blades and I got the traps every time possible. As for items I failed in terms of farm so I ended with a blink, phase and desolator, pretty bad. I got maybe 3-4 kills, again, not great. We did lose the game but hopefully the more I play the better I'll get at playing her. Meld strikes are not easy. I didn't even consider using meld as a blink/auto attack thing. Thank you for the help :)
