It's not so much a matter of consistency. The title, or the first mentioned name, is the one they are known by and called, whether that be their "class" or character name. People really don't call windrunner Lyralie, and people usually don't call death prophet whatever her actual name is.
Actually I usually called DP Krobulus as did many others in DotA 1. Anyway it's really valve who aren't consistent they are using the common names for the most part to depict the character's actual title I've seen in their dev forums and on reddit mentioning that it should either be by class or by name, no real word as of yet.
Whatever Valve does within the game itself is going to be what people expect to see on the site. So in the end it is probably best for us to be consistent with whatever Valve does in DotA2, whether or not it makes logical sense.
Yes, it is indeed Valve's fault.
e.g. The name in game is Nature's Prophet, however when you're looking for a replay for him you need to type Furion. (Though to be fair I believe it's due the characters ' and the space that doesn't allow for a successful search with 'Nature's Prophet')
Well a lot of the names are copyrighted by Blizzard and cannot be used, such as Rylai and Furion. There are many others, so they changed a lot of them and it will stay this way. Apparently they have no intention of using two names again in the actual game, it was just a trend started because of how WC3 required there to be a name in the experience bar for their class and a name for the unit.
