This has been fun as I've got to play a bunch of heroes that I wouldn't normally get near, playing a lot more solo mid, and doing a lot more carrying. These are all things I've done a lot of in the past, but I'd got into the habit of playing support almost every game as it seemed to need doing.
The funny thing is it's shown up for me just how bad a lot of the support play in the "very high" (yeah right!) bracket is. Really simple things not done, totally ignored or "that's somebody else's job". This week's worst offender was a Crystal Maiden who bought an Animal Courier and then not a single utility item all game, not even Dust of Appearance with a Bounty Hunter on the other team. Constantly stole kills and farm, here are her final items:
Power Treads
Shadow Blade
Black King Bar
Ghost Scepter
Blink Dagger
Fortunately I'd randomed Lina so did all the heavy lifting on support and made sure the team had what they needed to win.
I kinda get that it's horrible being lumped doing the full support job with a semi-support hero (e.g. Earthshaker, Sand King etc) as it can really impact on your performance - your team's picks were obviously poorly balanced, or a "harder" support has decided they're really a carry. But ultimately the job ALWAYS needs doing. So do it.
THE TL:DR GUIDE TO PUB SUPPORT
(In priority order)
1) Make sure your team has an Animal Courier
2) Make sure your team has Observer Wards
3) Upgrade to Flying Courier as soon as you have 220 gold
4) Continue to buy and place Observer Wards all game, do not delay buying them for any reason other than someone else on your team getting them
5) Buy Sentry Wards and Dust of Appearance as required
6) Buy your boots and core equipment
7) Buy anything else that will help you and the team, and consider it a luxury
So I say during the pick phase "I'm going hard support. I got Courier, I got wards"
Them team then proceeded to go Mirana Riki top. Lone Druid Lycanthrope bottom...
And no one else would play mid.
So I ended up trying to hard support from mid...
Ended up being able to harrass my mid enemy Viper decently. Got wards and upgraded courier and got boots and a bottle.
Then we got rolled for a long, long time.
Managed to finish Mekanism and Drum of Endurance by end game and somehow we squeaked out a win but it was awful in the process.
As a very general rule, if it's past 15 minutes and you still haven't got Boots of Speed something's been going very wrong. At this point maybe one of the other players on the team can maybe help you out with a set of wards while you get boots.
ok. but is there a point where u can say F*ck me, im buying my Boot of Speed now instead of wards? (expecialy as a CM?)
If the team doesn't need wards at the moment and/or you already have wards.
ALWAYS WARD FIRST!!!
Yep, before Bracer, before Tranquil Boots - Observer Wards and a Flying Courier are your first priority as a support. If you're having problems surviving then you need to look at your positioning - don't be alone, and don't be at the front. If there's fed assassin type heroes on the opposition, ask one of your team to take the wards and put them up. About the only time you have a tricky decision is if you're say 100 gold away from a Mekansm recipe, then maybe you ask your team to buy a set.
