And once I chose to do it after another player picked Crystal Maiden:
I'm hoping at some point to try: (if our supports actually buy wards)
( Urn of Shadows to follow)
So...how did it go? Well, it actually worked out pretty well all 3 times. Sacrifice denies 20-30% of their farm and experience (pretty brutal for a trilane), as well as giving your guaranteed experience and mana, and allowing you to pull the lane back towards your own tower. I played passively unless their supports disappeared and I could go 1v1 with their carry.
1 level in Frost Blast gives you an easy way of grabbing the occasional last hit (125 damage is pretty hard to argue with at this point) or harass their carry if they're short on consumables. 1 level in Ice Armour gives you some much needed protection, can help you push the lane out if necessary (use it on a melee creep) or even protect your tower after the new patch.
One of the best things is you get quicker access Chain Frost, which can be extremely punishing if they try to dive you, and gives you considerably more potential killing power otherwise.
The Downside?
I'm pretty sure this would be a bad idea against a push heavy lineup featuring the likes of Leshrac, Chen, Enigma or Enchantress. You've not exactly got fantastic health points, and no escape (Ice Armour is about as good as it gets), although your base movement speed is pretty good.
Whether you'd be better with a more ganky offlaner is open to debate ( Mirana, Clockwerk, Timbersaw etc), although some farm on Lich can make him pretty effective. I've usually gone with:
You hit pretty damned hard with all this, with a big ulti and an extra disable - would the farm be better used somewhere else..?
Overall, do you think this would be a viable tactic? I'm picturing it especially against hard carries who are really going to suffer from the farm/xp loss?
Games:
Game 1
Game 2
Game 3
I'm certainly curious to see whether the changes from 6.80 do start leading to more dual lanes, especially as offlane Lich is very effective in this role. 6.81 will be interesting from the point of view of Frost Armor buildings and Aghanim's Scepter. Tbh, even with the new frost armor I still think he's a bad choice against push lineups (and always will be), but strong against farming ones.
You're right Peppo, I'm out of date (but about to be back in fashion :)) with the Aghs, the new Veil of Discord is better at present, and even with the new Aghs it'll probably depend on AOE disables to really notice the improvement. The scope for "unlimited" damage is always enticing though :).
I think because Lich is so capable of being item independent (basically unlimited sustain with Sacrifice and Tranquil Boots), people don't realise he actually has pretty effective stat growth and scaling (certainly for a support). 2 agiliy/level and 3.25 int/primary isn't bad at all. With an Aghs and a Sheepstick he hits reasonable hard and has pretty good HP. Even though I've usually warded/upgraded courier, I've wound up in a sort of semi-carry role towards the end. Obviously this is pubs.
Tbh I'm more drawn to the strength heavy starting build over boots in the offlane. When you're hardly leaving the tower anyway, speed doesn't seem that important compared to being able to eat a combo and survive. You don't need right click damage with Frost Blast to do your occasional last hitting.
For example, I was up against a Sven/ Lina/ Shadow Demon trilane, which is pretty damned vicious by anyone's standards. My thinking was "don't feed, just deny" - if a lane like that can't get kills AND they're having their XP bled by Sacrifice then they're going to end up a lot worse off than me from this, and the team should have a big advantage. I think they managed to successfully kill me with a tower dive once, at about level 4. They tried it again and got a face full of Chain Frost the next time :). Tbh I think I could have survived the dive if someone on the team hadn't stole the courier with my Tranqs/Urn in it :(.
Overall though, you're probably right that this is a pub solo, and proper games would likely be a dual lane with Lich supporting. Him and Enigma would be hilarious - provided Enigma could get his Soul Ring you're probably cutting 50% of that lane's XP, as long as you don't get the Eidolons killed in XP range.
So.... what do you think will happen with spring cleaning update? 15 minutes Aghanim's Scepter offlane Lich = NEW META !! Lol, not quite sure about the whole meta thing, however, I'm sure that offlane Lich will be much more viable in 6.81, considering boost in his ulti with Aghanim's Scepter and Ice Armor being able to be casted on towers means it's not as easy to push the tower even with aggressive pushing tri-lane
He's never used as an off-laner as he can't deter incoming pushes by any means, but with the upcoming patch he will be able to do so. I still think it's not worth picking up an Aghanim's Scepter on him though, so I still don't see him as a viable competitive choice.
About your item choices, Scythe of Vyse is a good item to get with all the extra farm, while the Agh's is outclassed by the Veil of Discord in most cases. But who said you can't farm both? Also, if you're looking for exp loss, you can just run a dual off-lane like competitive players usually do with Lich. Another good tactic would be going dual mid with a hard carry like Phantom Lancer or Faceless Void.
I like him as a pub off-laner because it's easy to survive dual lanes and an Agh's ulti grants a teamwipe versus common players, most of the time. But I prefer going dual lanes when I use him in captains mode (and I don't like him in the safe lane because the Sacrifice gets wasted that way).
Honestly, I'd say Enigma fits this Role much better, since he can contest Pulls with Eidelons. If necessary he can even go Jungle to make up for a lack of Farm if needed.
A Dual Offlane with Lich and Enigma would be interesting to see in a Pub though. Make dem Hard Carries CRY!!! 8{D
