So I was playing a Viper mid against a Pudge. I was doing pretty well, not letting the Pudge get a single CS while rushing a 6 minute Mekansm straight after Boots of Speed. By this time, I had hit level 6, and the enemy mid tower was about 400 HP. Since Pudge had chosen that moment to leave the lane, I called him missing (we had observers on either jungle to watch rotations, so my team was OK), and stayed mid, because, I had a catapult wave coming (I could get their tier 1 mid extremely early ~7 mins or so).
Meanwhile, our team's Lion noticed that I had hit level 6. Instantly, he types "Viper 6 why no gank" followed by "Come gank plssss", while they had pushed the lane out to the enemy tower and harassing the enemy laners pretty well. I continued pushing the mid tier 1 with my catapult wave and got it down at around the 7 minute mark and started moving bot (since it looked like there was a 3 man group up at the bot lane). Lion (who was in the top lane) notices this, and starts typing "omg noob mid no gank gg". As I rotated bot, we won a fight against Sniper, Pudge, Tiny and Rubick with our Wraith King, Lina and I. Off this teamfight, we destroyed their tier 1 and half their tier 2. At around 10-11 minutes, I had half my Aghanim's Scepter, and meanwhile Lion was still complaining about me not ganking their lane.
Rest of the game continued in the same stride, and we won, but my source of annoyance is this notion that the mid laner needs to gank when he hits level 6. I'm not sure where this mindset comes from. I can understand if a Storm Spirit or Queen of Pain checking the top rune decides to make a quick detour at the side lanes and gank if there's a good opportunity, but I don't think this applies to every hero, especially, when we are gaining significant objectives elsewhere on the map.

I always think of this before I gank; will I be able to get kills for my team while not feeding?
Cause one of the worst things you can do is try for a gank and either not get anything out of it or give up too much in return.
I had the same thing in this game: http://www.dotabuff.com/matches/1157320260
The Io just kept going on at me to gank the solo Axe. I was a clock and he was laning with an Ursa. Twice i told him to bring the wave to our tower, didn't happen. Never mind the fact that i had a duel Pudge/ Shadow Fiend (Pubs...) mid (got surprisingly more farm than i should, the SF was terrible), Spirit Breaker/ Tiny top (no chance i'm ganking that!). And an Axe isn't a good gank target for a lane where most of the damage is melee AND he wants to be hit.
Long story short, the Io fed the Axe hard, called me a n00b and there were mass abandons. The game ended as me and Riki vs Axe and Shadow Fiend. The Axe was so fat, so i fed off the SF until i was big enough for me (with Riki's help) to take him out. We still lost, hard, but it was actually a bit fun. Me and the Axe had a bit of good banter.
Also, my record GPM (i know it isnt high, but i am a support usually!).
So i completely agree. The midder ganking sidelanes is very dependent on the game. There is a reason in top level/pro games it's the supports that gank mid and not the other way around. Leave the cores in lane. Let them farm.
If i get flamed again (like off the Io i instantly press mute. Makes life better.
If you are going mid in pubs, be ready for your teammates to call for help - they may screw lineups up, or get heavily countered. I understand both sides, for example here(http://www.dotabuff.com/matches/1179053004) void was constantly demading ganks on bot lane against Axe and Silencer, while he and Tide were half-hp and no mana so i obviously could do nothing. On the other hand, I was just left solo against Silencer here(http://www.dotabuff.com/matches/1172488215) for 10+ minutes and Pudge just wouldn't come though I spammed the chat with >Help and we could kill Silencer easily and get a chance of taking their t1 tower. Both games are lost(first game because of trash Void, second loss was my fault as well, I obviously couldn't fight against their lineup though I did hoping to win the teamfight and get a GPM boost, should have tried to rat them).
The best choice is to pick scaling mids who can gank at the same time, Strom Spirit, Viper, etc.
It happens a lot of times ho me, but if you get ahead with Viper it's worth getting a tp and go snowball like you did over the tier1. Even more if you got mek. Viper is just so strong early and mid. But the Lion just looks like an other pub scrub.
The Riki did get a basher (he has an Abyssal Blade in his inventory). However, the lack of Diffusal Blade is disturbing though. It's usually the first core item on him.
I mentioned in another Match, there was a Riki who wouldn't use his Dust to silence the enemy, and all he tried to do was backslash. He bought a Divine Rapier and actually got to kill one of the enemy who held one, so he got two. And then, he dies, and the enemy gets both. And just to put it in perspective, this was a game where it was 2 vs 5.
