I thought his name have always been Carl in DotA 2. I know his nickname was Carl in DotA 1. Now this is his official name XD

It was Carl because in Dota 1, his name was "Kael" like the Blood Elf Mage his model is based off of. When a changlog was translated in chinese, it came out as "Carl", and the playdota community thought it was hilarious, so the name kind of stuck. His name in Dota 2 is technically Garral, and it's kind of a tribute to "Carl".

According to the DotA 2 wiki, his name is listed as Kael, not Garral. However, his name is never actually mentioned in the lore, and he is referred to only as the "invoker".

Other heroes refer to him as Garral every now and then, I forget which, and some Kael as well. 90% of them call him Invoker or Arsenal Magus, though.
