So I have been playing about 2-3 weeks, have a fair few games under my belt (65 hrs played) and have been looking for my hero, a few heroes have seemed to sort of click kotl, lich n Earthshaker but I was still looking for a hero I could play a lot and never get sick of, a go to hero if you will.

I love playing support, LOVE! I have played around with other roles but love support the most and the sub roles that come with it, anyway I started to play Chen today and I instantly fell in love I have only played bots as there is quite a bit too learn about this hero and I feel it would be unfair too pub until I am ready, with that in mind.

Why is Chen the lest played hero in pubs? (see link below), from everything I have read about him he almost fits into any team, and can be devastating in the right hands, he has counters but nothing that would render him 100% useless say clinks, enchantress, doom to name a few. I am new and Chen is not newbie friendly but it's the first hero I have played that has really clicked.

I still suck with him but I really want to spend the time to learn this hero inside and out and I don't care if it takes 1000 hrs, just wondering why he is lest played, is there some weakness I am not seeing or does he only suit certain play styles?

Thanks for the help

People are scared since he is a micro intensive hero and dota players arent favorable towards that. Look at meepo. In competitive play, hes a hero that helps early pushes but an aggrisive trilane makes his usefulness decrease since he needs to farm the jungle. He gives the team alot of heal with his ultimate and mek+test of faith sendback is really good since it can save a carry thats getting focused. Hes a hero that you pick to dominate the early to mid game. And, people might say tryhard if you pick chen.

tryhard? I love playing him and if the only reasons being no one else plays him are micro intensive/being perceived as a tryhard then so be it, i love the hero, he will take a lot of practice and as soon as I played him i could see how easy it is to become flustered but 100% worth it.

thanks for the info : P

He is a support.
He is not an AOE nuker.
He doesn't do anything that's "OHMYGODTHAT'SAWESOME", in the eyes of your average, uneducated (about dota) pubplayer.
And he's hard to use.

These qualities make him unfavorable for pub players when they want stuff like Riki and Drow Ranger.

Oh, and if Chen really did click, I congratulate you. You have micro running in your veins unlike many others (including me) who don't have any micro talent.

thanks for the comment!

I am uneducated but trying to learn fast, as my main goal is to get into a team which is a long way off I know.

My micro skills are solid, but I will have to practice to get them higher where they need to be to really make Chen shine, as a support player, he fits my view of a perfect support hero.

Through jungling he keeps the 3 lanes open for other heroes making sure they can get the best farm possible.

He can buy all the support stuff if needed and in a pub that is always great as you said yourself support is not a fan favorite role so being able to do that is huge.

He has amazing early ganking capabilities giving the lanes closest a huge chance to dominate the laning phase. And if a team member on bot or mid pick up a stun right off the bat you could even go for a level 1 gank with picking holy Persuasion first.

His ultimate is insane if you keep your eye on your allies you can potentially save them in a conflict from the other side of the map.

He has amazing pushing power which make split push possible, and his heal would still work, gotta love the global.

I try and look at heroes though my own eyes if that makes sense, this is what I see when I look at Chen I might be way off but the fact I can see that right off the bat without much practice with him I think he could have even more potential in the right hands, and pull off some amazing plays, then again I could be wrong lol, hence asking about him since not much is around.

I prefer enchantress to chen (harpy chain lighting harass makes a mid's life terrible) and she has some lategame but they are heros that need the teamwork and coordination. With Chen, if you dont push towers down or geta good early game, hes becomes somewhat useless. check r/compdota2 if you want to look for a team.

Pubs aren't about winning. People that play pubs are all about their own personal kill ratio at the end of the game. I have no idea why. these stats are not saved. You don't get a check in the mail for having 25:2 at the end of the game while the rest of your team loses.

It goes as far as, I've been aware that most teams won't even initiate. They wait until a teamate jumps in and dies, then they go to finish off the kill. After that they'll call him a noob based on his kill ratio.

I rarely see support picked at all in pubs. We often get teams of all carry, then they wonder why everyone lost their lanes and call eachother noobs, or draw *****es on the screen.

Bottom line: Pub players are on average ******ed FPS players.

I've played Chen quite a bit, and I think he wins games. He isn't quite as satisfying as some other heros, as you'll spend most of your time in the jungle, even after the laning phase, to farm and replace your minions. Then you you'll hit towers when the opportunity arises, as your minions will make quick work of a tower while their team is distracted. All the while you'll be watching the team fights from a far, ready to cast your heal. You can also gank with the better nuetrals, during the laning phase. But for the most part, you just don't see as much action with him as some other heros. However, as a support, I think he is on of the best support heros in the game and my win ratio with him reflects that. Only Dark Seer is capable of making such an impact.

Yea I tend to agree, with pubs from what I have read and playing only a handful of games myself atm was hoping it was a lower bracket thing, people want to try the shiny OMG heroes first, bit disheartening.

I love support, it clicked as a role for me, I don't know if I'll ever be considered a good player, but that won't stop me from trying, am I getting the most xp I can as support(without taking away from carries farm)? Should I even be farming? am I giving my team mates the best chance to farm optimally? Can I hinder the opponents xp/gp gain though setting up a gank or harassing? Has the enemy team put down wards if so where? Are my wards placed optimally?

There are even more questions and you can not do everything at once being a good support in my eyes is not only knowing the answers to these questions but prioritizing them.

I do this in a reply, go over what I did ask myself these questions and make notes of my mistakes but in a game I go on gut, you can't sit there and think for 2 mins every time a choice is given on what to do next, that's when experience should take over, which I do not have much of atm :(.

This is why Dota in my view and even though I am new is one of the best games ever, its pure complexity can be obvious or subtle, from beginning to end every stage is important and a thrill, its a brilliant game. I can't understand people playing it like a fps your only getting a little part of the brilliance that is Dota.

Another idiot who likes micro. We somehow manage to take a hard, complex game and make it harder. Go us. I love Chen, Meepo, Lone Druid and Natures Prophet.

So with Chen, first and foremost, he is a support pusher. In low level pubs, people don't like to push towers for some reason but Chen is great at it.

I assume you've read some guides on chen? the other thing to look at is watching some pro replays of Puppey (Na'Vi) and Akke (Alliance). See what they do, how they move etc.

As far as in game, I go for the world simplest micro setup on Chen with control groups
1-Chen
2-All Creeps
3-Everyone
4-Troll (for nets)

Couple of things to remember playing him in particular.
1)You are a support. Buy courier, wards, mek, wards, arcance boots, wards, wards, wards, wards, wards. (seriously)
2)Don't lead the fight, in fact, try to stay just out of the fight. You have a global heal (hand of god is awesome), mek for more heal, and arcane boots for more spammability from your team mates. The best way to do this is wait for the ults from the other team (call down, Warlock ult etc) then pop hand of god. They have wasted their ults and your team is on full.
3)Be patient. He has an extremely steep learning curve. Don't let people abuse you for feeding or missing ults etc.

Good luck man, if you happen to play on Aus servers, feel free to add me mattyg2787
