ELO is a scoring system based on losing or gaining a set number of points. All players start at a certain number of points, lets say 1000. With each match, they can gain/lose a number of points where the gain+lose=a set number like 50. So lets say the radiant has been deteremined by the computer to be more skilled. The score could then be +20/-30 for them.In turn, the dire would have a +30/-20 since they are less favored so they can gain more points. The more in favor the skill is for 1 team, the less they gain. So more skilled players have a higher elo.
ELO was first used in chess, however, it has been apparently known world wide for its usage and half-good import in League of Legends.
IMO, straight ELO shouldn't be the way that MM should be ranked. Since the system is designed to put together players of the same level, each game would be +1/-1 in terms of ranking. In chess, players are matched more randomly so there can be the differences in the +x/-x. I feel like a ladder ranking similar to starcraft would be a better option.
Yet you are still not recognizing that he said that this is something new. As in why is there an increase in rage quitters. An increase would suggest that previously there were less RQ and now there are more. So how can you tell him it's because he's not got to the level where RQ's arise less often. If you are indeed correct then the only logical conclusion would be that he has dropped several levels. That could make sense, except for the fact that it has happened to many of us since the game came out of beta and is a common complaint not just on this forum but many other dota 2 forums. I really feel your answer is merely to tell him that this isn't an issue at all, when clearly it is a recent change for many.
OK I'm saying his ELO is low enough to queue with new players regularly. Before the release of the game, he would get a low percentage of RQ-ed games, say 1/20. With the influx of 400K new players, now he gets 1RQ/10games or 1RQ/5games. Of course this is something new, but it's just MM working like it's supposed to.
