As i already have a thread up i will take the chance to ask a few other questions. I have so far only played 1 Dota 2 game but i havent had access to any computer(using phone now), it was a fun game though but pablo bot op!
What do levels do in this game? what is the maximum level? At the moment it looks as if i can play all Dota 2 heroes from the start without having to purchase them for in-game money like League's Influence points.
Since all of you are saying that there isnt any hero similar to Irelia i will have to ask if there is a melee assassin bruiser hero that is good at sticking onto carries lategame. What lanes do you normally have in dota 2? I have heard that a jungler isnt nearly as important as it is in LoL. Do you have 1 top, 1 mid, 2 bot and a jungler normally? Or are there loads of different roles for every character? 0.o
The dota meta game is always changing. at the moment, trilanes are getting quite popular which is another topic entirely. as far and your hero question, a good top solo melee hero would be Beastmaster, but he requires a considerable amount of skill and not really recommended for beginners.
The maximum level is 25. Each time you level up, you get a skill point to spend on an available skill of your choice (or +2 to all attributes). In addition, your hero also gets a fixed amount of attributes, which varies from hero to hero.
Lane setups are very flexible. You can run trilanes, dual mid lanes, or multiple solo lanes with a roamer(s) and still come out ahead. The only real restriction is that some heroes are better suited for some roles than other heroes. As for what usually happens, most games run either a 2-1-2 setup, a 3-1-1 setup, or a 2-1-1 setup with a jungler/roamer.

...Or you could Zerg Rush, but that's not recommended. lolz
As far as heroes for top lane is concerned, Bounty Hunter is a fun solo top and well as Broodmother. However both of them rely on their invisibility to maintain control of the lane so be aware of a Sentry Ward or Dust of Appearance.
And this may not be what you're looking for, but from what I'm seeing in Irelia's abilities, you are looking for a character that can disable your opponent till you get near enough to siphon all their health away. If that's the case I'd look into Phantom Assassin or Templar Assassin with some sort of lifesteal. Just be aware that these are harder carries and may take more farm than other characters to become effective.

I'm pretty sure he's asking about player level instead of hero level. The only thing that the leveling system CURRENTLY gives you is a random cosmetic item every time you level up. But that might change in the future since Valve is exploring ways to encourage you to play more.
Gyro drops off late game, so he's not really much of a carry. I always though of him as more of the opposite, you get a strong early game for a weaker late game. If you ganked a lot then I guess the levels you'd have over the enemies would carry.
Take a look at some of the recent competitive games from EU/NA! Gyrocopter (and PL) have been the carries of choice recently. The Gyrcopter BKB+Divine Rapier+Flak Cannon is devastating.
