I think that Ganking is a skill that one is born with not one that can be attained with practice. You either got it in you or you don’t. To be an effective ganker you have to have an aggressive mentality and must be able to judge the probability of a successful gank swiftly. You have to be want to kill the other player and not be passive player.
I disagree; I initially went from a very passive playstyle because I was scared of dying and having my team yell at me, to being the one on the team asking for ganks periodically and constantly ganking from mid lane. On the other hand, you can't be a truly aggressive player because then you're going to want to go in for the gank at all times and even if it isn't really a good idea, you'll convince yourself that it is because you want the kill.
You need a combination of being passive (okay, I left my lane for nothing, but this isn't the time for a gank right now) and aggressive (now's the right time to strike!) to be an effective ganker, and no one has that sort of innate intuition, regardless of what your playstyle is like.
for mayself its almost the same...i played played really passive in the beginning, but now i'm pretty aggressive with ganks and most of them are successful
also a few friends of mine, who are mostly beginners, start to get better in ganking with every game they play
in general, I don't believe there are any gaming skills that can't be learned through practice
You can learn it, but somebody will never really get the trick right.
If the day should ever come when we must go, if some day we are compelled to leave the scene of history, we will slam the door so hard that the universe will shake and mankind will stand back in stupefaction. Joseph Goebbels
The trick is easy. You need to gank the opponent that has the highest chance to die,you obviously won't gank Pudge when you can gank Shadow Fiend for example.
Also many gankers rely on skill-shot nukes( Meat Hook,Arrow, Shadowraze)and whatnot.Get those right, and ganks will have a higher chance of succes.
I also agree that you can learn to gank. I used to be pretty passive, but after a few games of my friends raging/teaching me how and when to be aggressive, I learned quickly.
one of the important things that helps you gank more is experience. the more you know about the game, the surer you are in what you'll be doing and the more confidence you'll have.
I think it also depends on how comfortable you are with your hero. First time playing a hero, one will be more passive trying to figure out timing and how spells work. No guide can teach that, just takes time and practice.
I do agree, however, that there are some people how are more predisposed to being more aggressive and will probably pick up ganking a little faster. There are also those who play passively because that's their comfort level.
