Let's take a break from all the 6.84 talk... but talking about hero skill ceilings! As patches suggest, not all heroes are created equal, some heroes are harder than others. Which hero in Dota 2 is the hardest to play?
I'm gonna say invoker he may have a lower skill floor then the micro heroes but with 9 spells you can do a lot and choosing the best spell for that time in a split second is going to be really really hard in a teamfight.
It's definitely Chen. I've played Meepo 7 times, and he ain't that bad. That's because all of your Meepos have the same skills so you know what buttons you're pressing. On the other hand, Chen can choose from a myriad of different creeps and has to micro them all, while still having a good knowledge of what each of them do. That's why I voted for Chen.
It's a good question, and I think the top 4 heroes are all worthy of special mentions, Earth Spirit has huge positional requirements, Chen requires timing and micro, Invoker fast fingers and decision making, but my award goes to Meepo.
Basically it's impossible for a human to play him to his full potential - you simply cannot be fast or observant enough to be fully utilising the skills, last hitting, positional requirements etc of that many heroes in different parts of the map. You simply can't flick the screen around or process it quickly enough.
Theoretically, a Meepo player could be landing a perfect Earthbind in one lane, last hitting creeps in 2 others, while ganking their jungle with an ally and doing a blink/poof with the 5th. And doing all that kind of thing continiously through the game. I don't think even Starcraft level micro could achieve that, you'd need AI.
BTW I'm not saying you the baseline for playing him reasonably effectively isn't lower than the others, simply that the ceiling is higher.
Good question; difficult answer. Here's my comparison of them all, with my opinionated skill rating (0-10):
Invoker
Challenge: Continuously swap between and utilize 9 different spells using 3 orb abilities.
Skills required: Great mechanical skills, planning, map awareness, lane domination, skill timing and aiming, CD management, positioning.
Skill floor: 4
Skill ceiling: 9
Reasoning: Invoker is bound to his 9 abilities, with which he controls the game, and their cool down. Using them at the right time and place is crucial, but he can only throw them once (or twice with Refresher) during a fight. Utilizing all his abilities, using items and having correct orbs requires very high single-hero mechanical skills. He is a very versatile hero and requires great knowledge about the game. A perfect invoker can control a fight and possibly win the game single-handedly.
Meepo
Challenge: Creates up to 4 clones of himself that are controlled independently.
Requires: Great micro-management, efficient farming, timing, map awareness.
Skill floor: 3
Skill ceiling: 12
Meepo has only two abilities (and two passives), but requires managing up to five heroes with these abilities. Farming and fighting with five heroes simultaneously means his potential is theoretically that of five heroes (realistically perhaps that of three b.c.o. map restrictions). His farming potential, and the fact that you have to manage 5 heroes at the same time, is what makes his incredibly high skill ceiling. A perfect Meepo can win any fight alone.
Earth Spirit
Challenge: Uses his 3 abilities (4 with Aghanim's) and ultimate to manipulates inanimate stones remnants and control the entire enemy team during fights.
Requires: Great positioning, mechanical skills, ballsy-ness.
Skill floor: 5
Skill ceiling: 8
Earth Spirit's power is un-matched in the early game and he can completely decimate the enemy team during a fight if played right. He has the ability to stun, slow and silence ALL FIVE of the enemy heroes, while doing great (magic) damage. This requires great positioning and "aiming" skills, which is why his skill floor is perhaps the highest in the game, but he is limited to his 3/4 abilities + ultimate and their cool downs. Earth Spirit is the kind of hero who can go 1v5 and get a Rampage at level 6. However, no matter how perfect you play, Earth Spirit cannot win the late game alone (if the game comes to that), although he can still be very useful.
Chen
Challenge: Can take control over up to 3 neutral creeps and must use their abilities as well as his own.
Requires: Great micro-management, knowledge of all neutral creeps' abilities, positioning, planning.
Skill floor: 4
Skill ceiling: 8
(I do not play this hero) Chen's army of creeps can be very powerful if used right. Using the right creeps the right way creates a high skill-ceiling. The hero itself however, requires little but positioning to be used correctly.
