DoTA began as a mod for warcraft III developed by a small team of warcraft players, namely IceFrog, eul, guinsoo, and neicchus using the game's built-in map editor. The heroes were designed by Eul, while the map was designed by Guinsoo. The map was published and soon gained popularity among gamers. It produced many series, spinoffs, and variants including the more well-known 'Dota Allstars' which was made by mapmakers Meian and Ragnor by compiling most popular heroes and compiling them into one map. Soon after DoTA Allstars 6.xx was finished, Guinsoo left mapmaking nd left the game to mapmaker IceFrog. Under the development of IceFrog, DoTA gained even more popularity and international appeal. In 2009, IceFrog was hired by valve to lead a team developing the standalone sequel for DoTA, DoTA 2. The marketing success of DoTA 2 under Valve corporation gained opposition from Blizzard Entertainment, mainly because of many the hero designs were based of Warcraft III heroes. However, this conflict ended in 2012 when Valve gained franchising rights for DoTA. DoTA 2 then was officially released to the public in 2013, with many eSports tournaments and competitions over the next years.
