Introduction

Spirit breaker is a crazy fun ganking hero who is effective throughout all points of the game. He can snowball off of early ganks into being able to solo kill enemy heroes and then transition into a tanky semi-carry in the late-game. This guide will focus on him ganking effectively and being able to solo kill as early as possible. With spirit breaker communication is key as communicating with your team mates prior to charging could mean the difference between getting a kill or not.

Barathrum the Spirit Breaker is a lordly and powerful being, a fierce and elemental intelligence which chose to plane-shift into the world of matter to take part in events with repercussions in the elemental realm that is his home. To that end, he assembled a form that would serve him well, both in our world and out of it. His physical form borrows from the strengths of this world, blending features both bovine and simian--horns, hooves and hands-as outward emblems of his inner qualities of strength, speed and cunning. He wears a ring in his nose, as a reminder that he serves a hidden master, and that this world in which he works is but a shadow of the real one.

Ability overview

Charge of Darkness

Spirit Breaker fixes his sight on an enemy unit and starts charging through all objects. All enemy units passed through and the targeted unit will be hit by a Greater Bash. If the targeted unit dies, Spirit Breaker will change his target to the nearest enemy unit to that location.
MANA COST: 100/100/100/100
COOLDOWN: 35

ABILITY: UNIT TARGET
AFFECTS: ENEMY UNITS
CHARGE SPEED: 600 / 650 / 700 / 750
STUN DURATION: 1.2 / 1.6 / 2 / 2.4

The reason spirit breaker is such an effective ganker, always look for people to charge across the map. Be sure to communicate with team mates before you charge to make sure the gank goes smoothly. When charging, try and position yourself such that you wont pass through enemy lanes or popular ward spots, so that when you reach your target they will be surprised.

Empowering Haste

Causes the Spirit Breaker to gain power with higher movement speed. His presence increases the movement speed of nearby allied units.

ABILITY: PASSIVE, AURA
AFFECTS: ALLIES
BONUS MOVE SPEED: 6% / 10% / 14% / 18%
AURA RADIUS: 900 / 900 / 900 / 900

Solid movespeed aura, max second.

Greater Bash

Gives a chance to stun and knockback an enemy unit on an attack, as well as gaining bonus movement speed after a bash occurs. Deals a percentage of movement speed as damage.
COOLDOWN: 1.50

ABILITY: PASSIVE
DAMAGE: MAGICAL
CHANCE TO BASH: 17% / 17% / 17% / 17%
MOVESPEED AS DAMAGE: 10% / 20% / 30% / 40%
STUN DURATION: 1 / 1.2 / 1.4 / 1.6
KNOCKBACK DURATION: 0.5 / 0.5 / 0.5 / 0.5
BONUS MOVE SPEED: 15% / 15% / 15% / 15%
SPEED DURATION: 3 / 3 / 3 / 3

Gives you a sick passive bash, obviously benefits from a high attack speed to get more bashes off. Max this first as this is what your charge scales with.

Nether Strike

Spirit Breaker slips into the nether realm, reappearing next to his hapless victim. Upon reappearing, a Greater Bash of the current level occurs and deals bonus damage. Upgradable by Aghanim's Scepter.
MANA COST: 125/150/175
COOLDOWN: 75

ABILITY: UNIT TARGET
AFFECTS: ENEMY UNITS
DAMAGE: MAGICAL
BONUS DAMAGE: 150 / 250 / 350
RANGE: 400 / 550 / 700
SCEPTER RANGE: 550 / 700 / 850
SCEPTER BASH RADIUS: 250 / 250 / 250
SCEPTER COOLDOWN: 20 / 20 / 20

Does a huge amount of damage and a stun to a target with a large range, once you get this you can start solo killing quite easily. Always use this straight after charging to secure a kill. In team fights use this on a high priority target such as a support you think you can burst down quickly.

HOW TO SPACE COW

This build works for Barathrum in either the offlane, mid or safe farming position, I prefer him in the mid or the offlane though for the solo XP. Just try and farm in your lane if you can but if not getting solo xp is good enough. Try and gank mid at least once before level six and once you reach six you should definitely be able to secure a kill somewhere and start snowballing off of that.

You should be ganking throughout the whole of the mid game whenever you see lone enemies on the map as this is your greatest strength. In teamfights you should be looking to hit as many people as possible with your charge and then just do as much auto attack damage as possible after using your ultimate.

Item justification

Urn of shadows

Great item for spirit breaker. Gives some nice STR and mana regen as well as being great for ganking. Get this before boots.

Power Treads

Best boots for Bara. Gives attack speed to proc more bashes and some bonus STR.

Armlet of Mordiggian

If you build this as soon as your treads are finished it makes you hit like an absolute truck, as well as making you super tanky. Fantastic item for fighting in the early game and the sooner you get it, the more effective it is.

Aghanims Scepter

If you are doing well, this is the item that will increase your snowballing ability. It puts the Nether strike cooldown to just 20 seconds as well as making it hit in a small AOE. The low cooldown makes you able to use it everytime your charge is off cooldown as well as several times in a team fight. The earlier you get this item the more effective it is, you should always buy the point booster first as it gives some much needed stats for a very low cost.

Shadow blade

You can activate this during your charge to surprise people more easily, very good item to secure more kills in the mid game. Situational whether or not you think you should get this as it becomes less useful the later you get it, but I think Aghanims should always be prioritised.

Black King Bar

Makes you a team fight monster with all your armlet damage and your bash, get this if the enemy team has several disables no question.

Mask of Madness

This item is kind of controversial but I honestly really like it in some situations. Often times during ganks it can provide the little bit of extra DPS you need to secure kills. NEVER ACTIVATE IT DURING A TEAM FIGHT! I can't stress this enough only activate it if you dont think you will be receiving much damage.

Daedalus

Boosts your DPS massively as you can crit on the bonus damage from your bash. Should be the first late-game damage item you pick up.

Heart of Tarrasque

When you feel ready you can replace your armlet with a Heart.

Satanic

Gives lifesteal as well as more tankiness and damage. The active when combined with a BKB makes you incredibly hard to kill.

Assault Cuirass

Great team aura and great stats for you, never a bad pickup at any stage of the game.

Heavens Halberd

A solid item on spirit breaker, gives a bunch of strength as well as evasion, the active is really good for disarming and scary right-clickers.
