MID GAME ALCHEMIST GUIDE

SOHEARNY
February 21, 2014

Introduction

Alchemist is a straight up beast. This guide is how I think he should be built to be most effective during the mid game, which I think is his best time to shine. Alchemist also has a great ability to transition well into the late game.

The sacred science of Chymistry was a Darkbrew family tradition, but no Darkbrew had ever shown the kind of creativity, ambition, and recklessness of young Razzil. However, when adulthood came calling he pushed aside the family trade to try his hand at manufacturing gold through Alchemy. In an act of audacity befitting his reputation, Razzil announced he would transmute an entire mountain into gold. Following two decades of research and spending and preparation, he failed spectacularly, quickly finding himself imprisoned for the widespread destruction his experiment wrought. Yet Razzil was never one to take a setback lightly, and sought escape to continue his research. When his new cellmate turned out to be a fierce ogre, he found just the opportunity he needed. After convincing the ogre not to eat him, Razzil set about carefully concocting a tincture for it to drink, made from the moulds and mosses growing in the prison stone work. In a week's time, it seemed ready. When the ogre drank the potion, it flew into an unstoppable berserker rage, destroying the cell bars and exploding through walls and guards alike. They soon found themselves lost somewhere in the forest surrounding the city with a trail of wreckage in their wake and no signs of pursuit. In the tonic's afterglow, the ogre seemed serene, happy, and even eager. Resolving to work together, the pair set off to collect the materials needed to attempt Razzil's Alchemic transmutation once more.

Ability overview

Acid Spray

Sprays high-pressure acid across a target area. Enemy units who step across the contaminated terrain take mixed damage per second and have their armor reduced.
Mana CostMANA COST: 130/140/150/160
CooldownCOOLDOWN: 22

ABILITY: POINT TARGET
DAMAGE: COMPOSITE
RADIUS: 625
DURATION: 16
DAMAGE OVER TIME: 14 / 20 / 26 / 32
ARMOR REDUCTION: 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

Good early laning ability providing extra last hitting power and harassment of your opposing mid. Also pushes the wave to allow you to control runes more easily. The minus armour it provides is also fantastic for ganking and farming neutrals/ancients.

Unstable Concoction

Alchemist brews up an unstable concoction that he can throw at an enemy hero, to stun and deal damage in an area around the explosion. The longer the concoction brews, the more damage it deals and the longer the stun. After 5 seconds, the brew reaches its maximum damage and stun time. However, after 5.5 seconds, the concoction will explode on Alchemist himself if not thrown.
Mana CostMANA COST: 120
CooldownCOOLDOWN: 16

ABILITY: NO TARGET
DAMAGE: PHYSICAL
MAX STUN: 1.75 / 2.5 / 3.25 / 4
MAX DAMAGE: 150 / 220 / 290 / 360
RADIUS: 175

Amazing stun, huge stun duration and damage when fully charged. The stun also deals physical damage with couples beautifully with the minus armour from acid spray and the medallion you will pick up.

Greevil's Greed

Alchemist gets bonus gold for killing creeps; the bonus stacks if the creeps are killed within a period of time, after which the count is reset. The bonus gold is capped at 30 gold.

ABILITY: PASSIVE
RECENT KILL WINDOW: 25
BASE BONUS GOLD: 4 / 6 / 8 / 10
EXTRA BONUS GOLD: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4

Good ability for a hard farmer, but for this build we will max it last because it delays our mid game killing potential. If you are behind in the mid game this is a great ability to help you catch up in farm.

Chemical Rage

Alchemist causes his Ogre to enter a chemically induced rage, reducing base attack cooldown and increasing movement speed and regeneration.
Mana CostMANA COST: 50/100/150
CooldownCOOLDOWN: 45

ABILITY: NO TARGET
DURATION: 25
BASE ATTACK TIME: 1.4 / 1.2 / 1
BONUS HEALTH REGEN: 50 / 75 / 100
BONUS MANA REGEN: 3 / 7.5 / 12
BONUS MOVE SPEED: 30 / 40 / 60

This is what makes alchemist so scary in the late game and so hard to kill in the early game, provides great regen to keep you on the map as well.

HOW TO KILL

Once you have your core items built you are a very scary ganker. To maximise damage from you stun combo you need to charge it for as long as possible, then acid spray + medallion your target and then throw the stun. This will cause the stun to do huge damage and the minus armour combined with armlet damage should be enough to finish most heroes off. When you have shadow blade or blink (I much prefer shadow blade) you can charge up the stun, then shadow blade or blink towards your enemy to surpise them and then do the combo.

When you have late game items up your ultimate makes you able to stand toe to toe with most carries as long as you are sufficiently farmed.

Item justification

Armlet of Mordiggian

Synergises so well with alchemists ultimate, getting this item early on a strength hero is so strong, giving you a huge damage boost and extra survivability. Get this after brown boots and you will already be a force to be reckoned with.

Power treads

Easy choice for me, attack speed and bonus str is great. Tread switching also good to conserve mana.

Medallion of courage

Solves some mana problems you have early on and goes amazingly with your other abilities. Causes your stun to do so much damage when combined with acid spray.

Shadow blade

I always get shadow blade on alch. Great for surprising enemies with your stun and the attack speed is really really good, the attack speed is the reason I prefer it over blink dagger.

Blink dagger

As I said before I prefer shadow blade, but blink does have it's benefits, being that the invis from shadow blade is rendered useless if the enemy has a gem or sentries, while blink can always be used to surprise enemies.

Maelstrom

After your core this should be the first dps item you get, the attack speed is so good combined with chemical rages base attack time reduction. The chain lightning effect is also really great for farming waves of creeps. Can also be built into a mjollnir when you can afford it.

Black king bar

If the enemy has 2 or more stuns or disables that are shutting you down, get a BKB, simple enough. Having free reign to chop away in fights with magic immunity will do more for you than another damage item, which would be useless if you can't even attack.

Skull basher

Coupled with the attack speed items you should build, basher is great as it allows you to just bash your enemies to death after stunning them. Can also be built into an abyssal blade later on.

Assault Cuirass

Great item, more armour for you and your allies, more minus armour for your enemies and more attack speed for you.

Monkey king bar

If the enemy has evasion at all, get this. The bonus damage is also really nice.

Heart of Tarrasque

When you need more item slots, sell your armlet and buy one of these.
