Why these items?
To start with, we have a total of three potions: Healing Salve, and two Clarities. These will save you from having to retreat after a fight, and allow you to farm for longer. Sage's mask is also very important. Thanks to the ridiculously small cooldown (4 secs), you will only need mana regeneration so you can keep using lightning bolts.
My explanation for the early game items is similar. Oblivion Staff (one of my favourite items) will let you keep using those damaging skills through mana regeneration, and will let you pack a punch when using basic attacks. Power treads will allow you to move faster around the map, chase fleeing heroes, and buy from shops without wasting too much travel time. The null talisman gives you an overall stat boost, but again, more focused on mana.
The Core items are very important. Once you have hold o Vladimir's aura, your high damage output will get heals on you very fast. Also, it will increase creep's survivability and allow you to use them as cover for longer when taking out towers. Maelstrom is another of my favourite items- it really suits Leshrac's lightning theme, and, in conjunction with other items, gives you the ability to take on vast amounts of creeps completely alone. Not only that, but I once killed four heroes within ten seconds thanks to my serious damage output, and the chaining from maelstrom. The void stone will give you a massive mana boost (you may think you have enough already from other items, but if you want to effectively use your ultimate whilst spamming other skills, you'll be thankful)as well, so either pick this up or get a point boost.
Use of Skills in Fights
This build is very focused on Leshrac's Lighting Storm, and as you can see from the build, it's essential you fully upgrade this as soon as possible. I wouldn't use this skill so much on creeps, but when it comes to Neutrals and enemy Heroes, it's a winner. If you're considering initiating a fight with heroes (like you should be), wait for all creeps to be occupied, and initiate with Lightning storm. One problem is that a lot of heroes can be scared by even a single, low-level-and-damage strike. This is where Split Earth comes in. Use this on the ground ahead or under them (but make sure you're within casting range first), and it will deal a decent amount of damage AND stun them. Catch up, and Lightning Storm again. By this time, it is likely your victim hero will be on around half health. Repeat the whole sequence again and finish them off with basic attacks if needed. Sound complicated? Read carefully, practice offline on bots, and it should make sense.
Diabolic Edict is, granted, a useful skill, but I find it very ineffective against heroes. You can sure use it on creeps to boost money, but only do so if you can afford the mana, or if you know that your mana will be regenerated before you have to engage in a fight.
Your ultimate is extremely overpowered, but is also very situational. I know for a fact that it drains more mana than the whole item build regenerates (when sustained), and this means that you're better using more economical skills like Lightning Storm on heroes instead. A reckless bout of Pulse Nova can easily drain your mana and leave you utterly defenceless against enemy offense heroes.
An exception to this rule would be that if you're being chased by a hero who has you on low health, activate pulse nova (you don't have to stop for casting) and your pursuer is likely to die or flee.
