AA is a poistion 4 hero, so he is a support but he needs some items to be really effective. His skill build is VERY flexible and is dependant on the game. His item build is simple: He needs some mobility in combination with some defensive tools.
At the start of the game, he needs some regen, both mana and hp. Build a wand as soon as possible. Buy a ring of basilius to get some mana regen and armor for you and your carry if he doesnt build aquila. Buy courier and wards if you dont have other supports in your game. Buy a soul ring to spam your abilites if you want. You have a lot of regen with tranquil boots, so soul ring will not be a problem.
Late game you will need force staff and possibly blink dagger to increase your mobility. Buy lotus orb for dispells and some protection, and buy aghanims for the late game ults.
