So there are numerous items in the game that benefit melee heroes more than ranged heroes. Heck, a battlefury does not cleave at all for ranged heroes, and vlads does not provide lifesteal. So the question is... when troll uses Berserker's Rage, does he "become" a melee hero and receive the item benefits that a melee hero would?

Yes, but that doesn't mean that Battle Fury is a well suited item for Troll Warlord.
