Sven

Rework

"My code compels me."

Design

I personally like that Sven has relatively versatile playstyles, even if his support build isn’t fully viable. However, I want to envision a version of him that really plays up the theme of being a ‘Rogue’ for this Knight. Think of this as more of a thought experiment where he is encouraged to stick to his private isolated code as outlined by his lore. As a result, his supportive build makes little sense for someone who stays forever solitary and thus, will be removed in this iteration.

Additionally, Great Cleave is just Battlefury, and that’s boring. I also think the rest of his kit could also be updated to be a bit more interesting.

As a disclaimer, this rework is not primarily intended for balance and is more focused on playing better to his thematic and story while giving him more exciting and nuanced gameplay. Here is the current Sven for reference, and any unmentioned numbers are assumed to remain the same.

Outcast Blade
Whenever he attacks, Sven swings to cleave all nearby enemies.

Ability: Passive

Cleave Damage: 30, 50, 70, 90%

The Vigil Knights still seek to reclaim what he stole from them, a weapon capable of cutting swathes through entire armies.

Discussion

  • The worst offender against his theme is definitely Warcry, not a bad spell by itself but it definitely goes against his rogue code. So it has been replaced by Rogue Code, an ability with passive and active components. Like how Desolate works but centered around him, the passive portion encourages Sven to venture onto the battlefield by himself. While the bonus is definitely high, it is certainly a tall order to force the player into isolating themselves from the rest of their team, such that his base stats like attack range and move speed have been increased to make up for this playstyle. And luckily, the active portion can let him retain the armor buff even if allies happen to come close by. The positive buff pausing lets him take full advantage of buffs from his other active spells, items and support heroes, lengthening their duration as he charges away from allies. Casting this also applies a basic dispel, allowing him to counter any attempt to impede him or his attacks. Overall, there is now a lot of reasons and thus more nuance in when he'd want to activate Rogue Code, so timing, coordination and prediction becomes key.

  • I know that Great Cleave serves its purpose in his kit but it's really just Battle Fury and personally, I wish it were more interesting and unique. So, it has been reinvented into Great Swing, a passive that still lets him spread his attack damage in a wide area to cut down his enemies, but in a shape. Instead of a trapezoid in front of him, it is now a circle around him so envision it less like a cleave and more like the splash effect like level 2 of Elder Dragon Form. This now synergizes with his encouraged solitary playstyle, positioning himself as deep in the middle of the enemy team away from his own.

  • The rest of his kit remains largely the same with the missing components of his removed spell incorporated into them. Storm Hammer hasn't changed all too much outside of number shifts but grants the bonus move speed. It now only lasts a short time but with the active of Rogue Code, he can essentially triple its duration to better chase or flee. God's Strength is also more or less similar with the physical shield transferred here. The key change to this steroid ultimate is that the bonus Strength it provides is now tied to the shield. This means losing the shield early causes him to lose the Strength as well, but with the passive of Rogue Code, staying alone for the armor buff bulks up the shield.

  • In terms of talents for this reworked Sven, the right side grants him more utility in fights while the left side just improves his ability to cut everything down. The level 20 Storm Hammer talent in particular is cool, as it lets him trigger on attack effects like the lifesteal and critical strike talent as well as his Great Swing. The level 25 God's Strength at first glance is great for soaking up more damage, but is also useful for extending the duration of the bonus Strength for as long as possible. All these talents can be chained whichever which way for added benefit, so he's not forced to go down any one route. Overall, this Rogue Knight definitely looks more powerful but remember the new focus on being isolated. Item builds are generally seen to be similar but with the level 25 critical talent, perhaps Daedalus becomes less popular and with Rogue Code, perhaps items with buffs like Satanic, Mjollnir and even Blade Mail may rise in priority.
