“Extraordinary!” Exclaimed the keen expedition leader, a particularly heavy set man by the name of Dorin. The sight he was beholding was farther beneath the surface of the Miracle Sea than any of his kind had been before. The gate to The Kingdom of the Deep Ones. No keen had ever been this close to the gates of the Deep Ones and survived. Of course the new state of the art cloaking field he had installed was designed for that very purpose. Yes the guardians of this place could keep any visible object from going invisible, but they couldn’t reveal an object that was already invisible.
At these unfathomable depths, no light was cast upon this magnificent world from the surface. Instead legions of luminescent sea worms lit the gates of the city in a marvelous display of teal blues and light greens. But at the foot of the gates however one could truly see why no surface dweller had survived to tell the tales of this magnificent place. Other than the beautiful display of these peaceful ocean dwelling worms lay their polar opposites, the bright lures of the kingdom’s Slithereen guardians. Thousands of the lures lit the foot of the gate, their massive muscular bodies tempered under the massive pressures of the deep. Some could even rival the monster strength and ferocity of the... that one fabled Slithereen guard. What was his name? Slardar? Yes! Slardar, that was his name.
With these discoveries he would become rich and famous beyond imagining, He would go down in history as a hero. Oh the possibilities were endless. Perhaps he would buy a lovely estate by the lake of his hometown, he could have any woman he wanted, and oh the sheer amount of lectures he would give at universities sprawled across the world----.
He was torn from his daydream by the concerned voice of his navigator. “Dorin, you should take a look at this.” With a rolling of his eyes he turned to the navigation console. The annoyance seemed to bleed from his lips, “what is so important, Felar?” The concern in Felar’s voice quickly turned to fear. “An unknown object moving towards our submarine at high speed.” “Towards us? Our cloaking field should hide us from the sight of any creature.” But out of the corner of his eye he caught a glimpse of movement outside the forward window of the submarine. It was quick, almost like a phantom. There one second and gone the next.
He turned back to his navigator. “Give me a location, on that object.” Felar just looked at the radar screen, his eyes wide with fear. Dorin reached down and grabbed the young keen by his collar and yanked him out of his seat. “Where is it dammit?” The terrified Felar slowly turned his head towards the forward bulkhead, and pointed with a trembling finger. Dorin suddenly felt a wave of fear rush over him as he turned his head to see death staring him right in the face.
Piercing white eyes that had the intensity of dragon fire were staring right back into his eyes, and into his soul. They locked eye contact for what felt like an eternity and then the massive creature, which he could only describe as a dragon of the sea seemed to simply vanish into the dark. The expedition breathed a sigh of relief, but Dorin simply continued staring out the forward bulkhead into the endless sprawling depths. Only Dorin managed to see the creature for one last time, for the majestic beast made a whiplash motion and accelerated like a jackrabbit towards the submarine. Only one word escaped Dorin’s lips before the submarine was completely and utterly destroyed by this incredible creature. “Extraordinary!”
