With Pudge being a perennial pub pick and Faceless Void getting a lot of attention after TI4, I've seen quite a lot of pub games where these two heroes are insta picked. A couple of days ago, I had a game in which the enemy team picked both Pudge and Faceless Void. It was the perfect game for me to go Outworld Devourer (screw that! It'll always be Obsidian to me).
So my fellow Dota players, if you see Pudge and/or Faceless Void and your team can use a mid hero, OD is a great choice.
Two Astral Imprisonments render early game Pudge useless (no mana for Meat Hook or Dismember). Even if Pudge hooks your teammate, you can go Astral Imprisonment the Pudge and watch him go mad. With Faceless Void, it's even more fun. He will be wasting 4 out of his 5 second Chronosphere contemplating the intricacies of life as he sits in your astral prison.
This has actually made me wonder why OD isn't competitively picked anymore to counter some of the "current meta" like a Faceless Void or Skywrath Mage. From my knowledge, Mushi seems to be the only player that even plays OD every now and then.
P.S: That game, I realized Bane can be a real **** if he wanted to. All early game, he was killstealing with Brain Sap to fund his Aghs, while Tide was left to buy courier, wards and such. In more than one teamfight, he nightmared me saying that he was trying to "save me", when I was perfectly fine. All he was doing was setting me up for Pudge to hook me xD
Probably people don't want to commit mid to OD when they can put a support SD.
Also I think many of the pros playing mid just don't like OD that much. Don't ask me why, it just seems that way o_o
I think the thing with OD not getting picked nowadays is that Razor and Viper, two heroes that counter OD in lane are really popular at the current meta. He was incredibly popular some time ago (6.79 I think?), when these two heroes were picked very rarely. I also think that he might be too greedy for the current deathball meta.
With Viper, Razor and Death Prophet being common mid picks there is very little space for an OD; even Doom and Brewmaster are much more appealing if you have to deal with a Void. The problem is that this meta is heavily teamfight oriented, and to counter those kind of lineups people try to pick tanky Heroes that can five man early: OD can neither survive a wombo combo nor wreak havoc 15 minutes into the game, when his INT is too low for a good ultimate. Taking him only to counter a Void isn't that good as there are many other top tier counters (like Skywrath Mage, Razor plus the two above).
All in all, I'd really like to see more Outworld Devourer picks since I find him a pretty good Hero: I mean, he can build a quick Mek like the other tanky mids, and even though his mid game presence might be lacking he wins most mid matchups. And this is a good thing seeing that a lot of teams rely on that mid DP/Razor/Tinker/Doom to get an advantage in the mid game.
EDIT: Seagull ninja'd me. Basically, we said the same thing but he was more coincise.
OD used to be really popular, but nowadays supports roam so much that if he dies once in lane he isnt worth the pick anymore. he only works when he crushes his opponent and has more net worth then his enemies.
