I've never played DotA 1, LoL, or HoN, I got into the DotA 2 beta and started playing it hardcore. However I'm basically done with learning ranged characters like sniper, windrunner, lina, and more specifically drow ranger. I love the guides but I'm not exactly in what direction I should be going now. So should I attempt to learn melee characters like ursa, tidehunter, bounty hunter or should i learn that support character crystal maiden [or the other ones not sure what their names are]? The only real skills I've got to lean on are that I'm decent at last hitting but I've got pretty poor self awareness which leads to easier than it should be ganks. I'm also looking to get taught by serious hardcore DotA 2 players. All input is good input feel free to shoot me a message here or add me on steam or my steam profile. By the way in return here's a walrus.

Well, for one, you should play every hero at least once. This makes you familiar to their play style as well as teaches you what their skills are and how to use them. It's a lot easier to predict when or how an enemy hero would attack you, this will go a long way in keeping you alive. Also IMO I think you should verse yourself in all types of attack types.
that seems like a pretty good idea but at the same time the goal is to not spend 50 hours playing a single character just to learn how it operates i'm looking for heros that start to stray from one and push into another you know?
I've played Dota on & off for the last few years & only became a regular player since I was given a beta key for Dota 2. My advice is try heroes that take you out of your comfort zone - i was stuck on ranged heroes because the idea of melee was intimidating, but melee are pretty fun - especially N'aix or Sven imo. You're going to stink to begin with but as everything else, practice makes perfect. There's not really a specific direction you need to go in my opinion, other than refining the fundamentals like map awareness, smart farming, & team play. The mroe you play, the more you'll realise which heroes compliment each other.
Learning to play every role at a competent level is important. Being able to play melee and ranged heroes isnt as important as being able to play carries, supports, gankers, and mid laners. You could honestly play only ranged and be able to do almost anything on a team well. That being said playing every hero once is a fantastic idea so you know what they are (and arent) capable of.
Also playing a support will teach you map awareness because if you dont have to focus on last hitting your eyes can be elsewhere, like on the map watching for missing heroes or chances to tp to other lanes and help out.
