So I have decided to force myself to get into Dota 2. I played a bit of the original Dota but never really understood it. I have never got into MOBAS and have little to no idea how they really work. I am going to commit myself to this game and need some tips on the best ways to get good fast, and what heroes I should start out with.

First off, if you have at least 2 friends that you can play with regularly, the learning process will be much smoother.

Really, just try not to die at this point.

Learn one specific hero really well so you can be more comfortable learning the mechanics of the game. I highly suggest Tidehunter, and play a support tidehunter. That means buy an Animal Courier if no one already has at the start of the game, and buy wards throughout the game to give your team map control.

As tide, you have a strong slow that can get your carries kills easy. Your ultimate has a huge AoE so it's easy to land, and it's a gamechanging 2 second stun. Get used to playing him so you know when to use what abilities, then worry about learning everything else later.

A buddy and me just started playing about 2 months ago. We suck. But we don't suck as bad! What we've been doing is picking a her0 then playing that hero on easier, easy, normal, then finally... people! Then we move on to the next one. After you've learned some basics, that seems to be like a pretty good plan. Here is a guide from Dota 1 that helped us a lot even with Dota2 having never played dota one. The guy that made this, "Purge" has some great videos online as well if you google search or youtube him. Good luck!

The usual way is to pick a hard carry always and keep running to enemy tower. You'll end up losing the game and going for another. Then you chip your Russian Vodka and start drinking and doing the process from all over again...
