Lane support is just a role that Valve created and you shouldn't pay attention to it. You can support even with Riki if you want.
"When game is going full ******, you can only go with it. If you start going against it, if you start going half ******, you´re ****ing done for. When Aloha decides to go middle rubick you let him, and you start buying orb of venom on invoker. That's how dota works" -n0tail
My opinion of the difference is that supports are hereos that don't need much gold, or any, to be effective.
A lane support is a hero that doesn't need gold and is very good at making easy farm for the carry by being able to easily zone out the offlaner.
For example, Io and Ogre Magi, are both support hereos, but aren't really that good in the laning stage or in zoning out the enemy.
Hereos like Crystal Maiden and Treant Protector are supports, but are exceptional at giving easy farm for the carry, cm by being able to do long range harass and mana so the carry can spam his spells. Treant by protecting the hero with living armor, and he has the highest starting damage so hits from him early really hurt.
Does that make some kind of sense?

It does , but yet why is Earthshaker a Lane-Support ? He's not that good in zoning out offlaners . or Venomancer is great in zoning out . With his passive he can harass like hell and with his ward he can easily prevent ganks . not to mention is Q ! yet he's not a Lane-Support !
Earthshaker is not a lane support, but probably got put there as he has a long range stun, even though you can't spam it.
Take what they say with a pinch of salt, they are trying to very broadly generalise stuff so bots understand what to use them as.
Just use your own intuition whether the hero is a lane support or just a support, you seem to roughly know which ones are good as you're pointing out the ones that don't make sense.
