With the continuous buffs to Meepo since the Poof nerf (particularly 100% Aghanims stats buff), it seems that he doesn't have to be limited to a mid-game time frame anymore.

He can make a powerful hard carry with ridiculous amounts of AoE damage, high farming capabilty, single-target damage, and mobility that can potentially counter the split-pushing compositions that counter team fight compositions so hard. Meepo can also afford to buy up on raw health without sacrificing too much damage. His laning isn't too terrible either with his high EHP at level 1 and decent snare.

One weakness is that he's vulnerable before his Power Treads and Aghanim's Scepter come online, but the same could be argued with an Anti-Mage that doesn't have his Manta Style or Spectre without Radiance/Diffusal-Manta. He also provides early benefits to his team such as his high-Poof damage, somewhat unreliable ensnares, and ability to Roshan quickly.

Considering that he's arguably as difficult to pick up as Invoker or Pudge, what is preventing him from doing well in the competitive scene?

On a side note: Bloodstone hasn't been fixed yet. Still waiting to witness the neverending split push that is Bloodstone Meepo.

I wouldn't classify him as a "hard carry". His advantage is that he gets a huge level lead on enemy heroes, and mid game, even late game if the enemy carry isn't as farmed as him, he can really demolish them. The way I see in all my games, if the Meepo doesn't end the game quick once he hits his peak or he doesn't keep the enemies behind, and a Faceless Void, Antimage, etc. catches up, he gets outcarried, and they can always just focus down one meepo can finish the job quick.

Meepo generally has to take advantage of split farming the entire jungle and 1-2 lanes pretty much simultaneously, which lets him come out of his farm phase with something like a 5+ level advantage on the entire enemy team. It's not hard to pull this off against uncoordinated pubs, but I would think in a comp-level match it would be trivial for the enemy to gank and quickly kill him, since they only need to kill one clone (split farming requires that the clones are separated from each other), and the clones have no escape (since Poof is channelling).

I don't see Meepo's difficulty to play as a problem - the issue is that he needs his team to create a ton of space for him to farm, and he is very vulnerable while farming. He requires a lot of babysitting for not that much of a return. It's just a matter of there being many better alternatives. Competitive teams are reluctant to pick carries that lack reliable escapes/durability, because they can get shut down easily and it's game over from there.

Idk fnatic pulled it off in a pro game although it hasn't been repeated. Meepo as the other posts pointed out is intended to gain a huge advantage and push the advantage to end it before the late game comes.
Fnatic.eu pulled it off with great success but were starting to falter toward the end because meepo was losing relevance as the harder carries against them started closing the gap, and this is after meepo had accumulated an immense farm advantage, he's just not as strong as hard carries. Just an example, imagine a meepo lvl 25 against a shotgun Morphling at lvl19-20 at the 45 min mark, boom shotgun a clone, meepos dead, or all the meepo vs a 45-50min spectre and dies to dispersion.
Step 1: Pick Bristleback
Step 2: type in all chat:"GL hf"
Step 3: solo offlane
Step 4: first blood triple kill solo vs trilane
Step 5: continue head butting keyboard
Step 6: don't care, Bristleback doesn't give a ****
Step 7: screenshot repeated: BB OP comments in all chat
Step 8: alternate games with Slark pick

Not a true hard carry but a semi-hard carry as in he can out level those 10/10 hard carries (Void, Spec, Medusa).

A pub stomper ^^

Meepo is not a carry, but a fun hero to play. He can act as a semi-carry from time to time. If I ever play Meepo I make sure to get a Dagon to secure kills

He's definitely relegated to a mid-game role.

BUUUUUUUT, like all mid-game powerhouses he can easily transition into a powerful lategame.... I don't want to say carry, so much as a powerful leader, a la Storm Spirit and Viper.
